Hi there

another question from a new owner

At the last Indie service, (I have just bought the car and the PO has kindly given me all the paperwork).......the indie indicated that there was an oil leak from the

"Sump and bridge seals"

The engine is certainly dripping oil - the usual spots that can look worse than they are

Can anyone thrown any light on his comments and how difficult is the job - presumably sump gasket etc., but maybe I am being a little simplistic

Cheers

Have searched the forum and cannot find any reference to "sump gasket or bridge seals" - the words of the Indie who last serviced the car - on his invoice/report

Any ideas please

the bridge seal is the horseshoe seal between the lower and upper timing covers. Tricky to do but manageable in your drive / garage. Sump seal can be done with the engine in situ but you will need an engine lifting crane. Best left to he who has the right kit.

Thanks Ian

Will either leak get worse

i.e. how long can I leave them - or is this an unknown

How long is a piece of string? I have known 124's go for 35000 miles with oil weeping from the bridge gasket ( my ex 260E did ). The sump? Not exactly convinced that the gasket is blown. A common problem is where the sump meets the timing chain cover, meets the block, a 3 way join. A loose sump bolt in this area can make the engine look like it is oil cooled, externally.
