Hey all, My dash Is reading "1 litre of oil needed to reach maximum level" do i just pout that amount straight into the engine where the cap is? also am i correct in that i will find what oil i am using in the service booklet ??

(sorry, this is the first time i have done this)

many thanks

James

Yep thats right on both counts.

You will find the oil type in the handbook. Also on most oil containers it will indicate what level of mercedes grade it is. Going from MB221.1 being the least good to MB221.5 which is Mobil 1 spec. Obvioulsy more expensive etc.

Good luck getting the cap off mines was really tough had to give it a bump with a screwdriver and hammer to loosen off.

Don't put the full litre in all at once. The warning message tends to be a bit premature and it's likely a litre will overfill the engine. Start with half a litre and see how that goes first.

As above it's easier to add more but harder to take it out if you overfill:)

Edit. Changed the original suggestion just in case.

Please do not do this.

many thanks all, my oil is mobil 1, have just purchased 1 litre, will see how i go :), also my service is due in 18 days, will this delay the service once filled ?

thanks

james

Can I just point out that cplnoonoo was a little off with the spec (probably just a typo!) - just to point out that most modern MB's will require either MB229.3 or 229.5

I believe the spec 229.31 or 229.51 is the low-ash variety for cars fitted with DPF's etc.

Some of the Mobil 1's are this spec but worth checking on the reverse label to make sure!

Adding the oil may extend the service interval but if it's down to days I wouldn't have thought so!

Won't affect your service(extend it) by adding oil as assyst is calling on a time not mileage related basis(in other words if assyst was saying service due in 200 miles after adding oil it would say something like service due in 1,200 miles).

Engine help again please ....

Hi all, thanks for the advice on the previous thread on how to top my oil up. I have decided just to book my w203 in for a service, as it is due in 18 days. My dash is reading out "1 litre of oil needed to reach maximum level"

My question is..... my service is not booked in until tuesday next week, and i have quite a journey to make at the weekend, (around 150 miles) will i be ok to be driving my car knowing it is short of a litre (or there abouts) of oil?

Many Thanks

James

Just top it up. Engines low on oil do not last long.

Did you not see mine/other replies on this subject on your previous thread?

Two threads on whether to top up the oil when the car says "Top up the oil" :dk:

thanks boys .... :| i didnt see the point in buying oil, if when i have my service in a few days, it will be included, hence the reason i asked the question

Never hurts to have a spare can of oil in the garage.

You don't have to buy a gallon of oil.

Even a 1L top up of mediocre oil would be better than driving it around with the warning on :)
