Hi, I have a 1993 300TD (non-turbo), which oil do I need for the engine for topping up.
Oil level OK, its just that I like to carry some with me. Not bothered about brand, just sort, ie 10/40 or 5/20.

Regards

Ian

What does the handbook say? Good to stick with the MB recommendation IMO.

On later diesels most use synthetic oils like Mobil 1 as you get much longer between services. But I don't know on your model. Someone will be along who knows.

Thanks for the reply, haven't had the car long, its 16 years old and I havent got the handbook, probably got lost over the years by one of the two previous owners. Would dearly love a MB Handbook for the car, anyone got one I could buy or know where I could get one from?
Still need to know what oil is required.

A good 10/40 will be fine, 5/20 is the viscosity of pas oil and is way way to thin.
I would stick with a mineral or a semi syn on such an old engine.

Agree 100%! A good semi synthetic 5w-40 or 10w-40. Would probably look for the MB229.3 recomendation.
