Hi,

I was a bit stupid and topped my C220 CDI up with oil and didn't screw the cap on fully. I drove 200 miles before realising and basically only realised when i noticed smoke coming from the bonnet.
I replaced the cap properly and everything was ok, car had a service, no issues there. But now, even 8000 miles later i can still smell oil regularly.

Should i get the engine steam cleaned ??? if so, does anyone know roughly how much this costs or can anyone think of another way of getting rid of this smell.

Many Thanks in advance

I would not have thought that it would still smell 8k down the line, are you sure that one of the sump breather pipes has not come off.
Some of the spray engine cleaners work well, but if you use them, use a kettle or the like for rinsing off to keep excess water off the electrics.

A garden pressure sprayer is very good for washing off the degreaser.

Don't get it steam cleaned. Waste of money and bad for electronics.

I'm surprised that enough oil came out of the filler cap to make a smell 8000 miles later tbh.

Any volatile components of oil on the engine would have vapourised by now. The only way you might be still getting an oil vapour smell would be if a further oil leak has developed which is continuously being driven off. OR some absorbent under-bonnet material has absorbed a large quantity of oil following your "cap incident"and is now releasing it slowly when subjected to heat. If your bonnet or engine compartment has sound deadening material you might consider replacing it ?

When i added the oil i only added a litre as thats what the car said i should do. When i did screw the cap on properly the car was happy didn't need to add any more so it can't have lost much.

since my last service i have checked the oil regularly and not needed a top up.

The only thing i can add is i was parked on a really steep hill a few weeks ago and when i moved the car after about 2 hours there was some oil on the road.

I was wondering if some had got into the air filter and was hoping it would go on my next service.

It's really bad and i have to get a new air freshener every 3-4 weeks just so i won't get a headache.

I'm quite concerned about this now ?

I normally get the car serviced independanytly but i may even take it to the stealer in 2k miles just to get it sorted once and for all.

sorry to sound silly , but could i be able to tell if a sump piped had come off ?

The link is for some of the breathing for the engine,do not know if the same as your car as there are 9 different types

Basically the engine needs to breath, this is done by take a pipe from the block back to the air intake. Just have a look at all rubber pipes and make sur that they all go somewhere. Its a long shot, but this could cause oil smells if a pipe is off.

All,

thanks for all your replies, i phoned up my stealer and thought i'd bite the bullet with them looking at it.

turns out i had a diesel leak and they have rectified this under warranty and the car is smelling much better now.

:)

was it leaking on to the road?

You can tell by seeing motorcyclists lying down at roundabouts in your rvm.
