Old Classic?

Day to day, I'd far rather drive a modern car. I like the reliability, the comfort, the handling and the safety.

But it's lovely to look at a rare classic. I always thought that model looked well with a pair of spotlights above the bumper, just filling the gap between radiator and lights. It's certainly a car to get you noticed on a sunny day.

Thanks for posting the photo.

I think that's wonderful.
Lovely to see it on the road.

Comfort - nope : these cars will beat any modern car hands down for comfort - when I take anybody out in mine the first comment is ALWAYS how comfortable it is , a combination of MUCH better seats and a proper suspension with high profile tyres that isolate the occupants from all the undulations and bumps in the road surface much more effectively than modern cars .

Reliability - again , NO . With proper maintenance these cars were the ones that established Mercedes' reputation for quality and reliability ; they are supremely well made , everything built to last and simpler with so much less to go wrong .

Handling & Safety - YES - there have been advances in both since these cars were made - although you would be surprised just how fast a W111 can be hustled along the road and I can effortlessly keep up with modern traffic in my W105 which is a generation earlier than the car pictured .

No , you don't need to pay anything like 50K - even for a coupe - the very best ones might reach those prices but you can get a useable one for a LOT less (under £10K) - they just don't crop up very often . Dave Collins had one for sale last year at well under even that figure ( a complete , sound car but needing restoration ) . I know someone else who bought a cabriolet for just over £20K , running with MOT and useable but again unrestored .

there's one hidden away in light gold and brown roof at MB Stratford .. looked immaculate.

was also an R129 AMG of some kind .. metallic black and LHD.

I simply put the picture up because we dont get to see cars of such character & distinction on the road these days!
Didn't realise it would set off a debate ;)

Have to agree on all your points....the 280se 3.5 which is similar to this in bodyshape but with a lower grill and no fintails but the later model with the stacked headlights (1970 - 72 I think) is no slouch and can shift when required......personally one of my all time favourite cars.

Regarding safety, if you hit someone or something in one of these you are more likely to drive straight through the obstacle and I would feel more sorry for the person that's been hit . Also if you are hit in the rear, there is soo much boot area, the chances are that damage will never get to the cabin :D.

As for comfort, anyone who sat in one of these would know that ther are extremely comfortable, the seats are massive and extremely well padded in comparison to the modern seat...if you saw the replacement seatpad for my W202, its a joke....there is more padding in a piece of thin sliced bread !!!! True these older seats may not support you properly if you want to fling the car around corners, but lets face it, you simply don't do that sort of thing when you drive one of these :)

Don't worry, you'll get to know us better in a while!
