Old Engine oil

    I got those 1litre Mobil 1 OW40 for the boot tray storage...given 2 services ago before they swapped to shell helix plus..
    this must be about 3years back..can i still use this engine oil or does it have a sell by date ..

    C43 AMG with a 55 engine and supercharger, E55 AMG, S500, etc
    It will be fine as long as its sealed.

    I would guess that the oil additives may have separated, but once in the engine it would all be mixed up again OK.
    As long as the sealed bottle has not degraded then all should be fine I would hope.

    I would say shelf life is virtually indefinite. Shake the bottle, tip it in.

    5 years for unopened containers sticks in the memory for some reason.

    i would use it, especially if the seal has not been broken.

    Can you top up an engine which has say 10/40w semi synth with mineral only oil?

    But if this is for the 300TD I wouldn't run it for long. Turbo bearings don't like mineral oil, it bakes on and eventually causes oil starvation, wheras synth can't do that.

    Well some of the trucks i see at work have over one million k and they run on mineral:)

    The new trucks (07 on) with adblue and cats have the new saps super syn oil.
