Old style alloy wheel bolts

Hi all,

I'm after the older style alloy wheel bolts of the 124 era.

They had a tapered seat and then the hex head of the bolt was flush with the face of the alloy with a stainless cap on so they always looked in good condition.

I asked at Mercedes a while back and they said they no longer do them?

Dave!

This is what I am lead to believe also. Pity as they are a nice looking bolt.
All the more reason to look after them as best you can. See the recent post on torqueing and copper slip...

They've been unavailable from M-B for a good few years I think, so unless anyone has a spare set knocking about ...

I'd be quite interested if anyone has a new set...:):)

I've got some used ones kicking about but i doubt a full set and i'm sure they'd need a damn good clean up. There's several new sets on the bay but they ain't cheap for example...

Having said that the stainless capped M14 version for the w140 appear to still be available and are even more £££ CLAMPING SCREW - E Class 1985 - 1994 E250D - Mercedes-Benz Parts, Inchcape

I regularly get stuff laser cut from 0.9, 1.5 and 2mm thick 304L stainless (2B finish which is very smooth but not that bright/shiney) and could supply flat hex caps for peanuts although i don't know how permantly they'd stay put with a dab of epoxy. Getting them cut from BA (bright annealed) wouldn't put the price much and BA is fairly close to a mirror finish. They could even be spot welded or soft soldered to the head of the bolt without getting the bolt itself hot enough to effect it's temper but by the time they've been spotwelded, radiused (to 'dome' them) and polished them probably looking at adding best part of a fiver to the cost of the bolt itself, probably more if soft soldering as it'd take longer and the low temp (200ish C) flux and silver/tin solder required ain't cheap

I have a load of these somewhere, not sure on condition though.

Worth noting that there's more than one type of these cap-finished wheel bolts in M12 format depending on the application. For cars such as the R129/500E/Sportline cars etc you'll probably need ones with the longer bolt heads if you want them to sit more flush with the wheel face. The other type are for thinner/narrower wheels like you'd find on a regular W124 etc. I think both have the same ~20mm thread, 20mm bolt shank approx - it's a cosmetic difference.

^^ that type look like the smaller headed ones to me and wouldn't sit flush on wheels with the deeper/more recessed bolt holes.

They might well be stainless but I always thought they were something a bit softer than that? I just assumed that they were aluminum! But thinking about it I guess stainless makes more sense

I do have a set of the longer type spare that need polishing up, but as you only see the ends it really doesn't matter. They are stronger than some of the newer MB bolts and they don't rust as badly either :)

A few minutes with some fine sandpaper and a bit of polish brings them up like new. You can see how they come up with a little elbow grease on an old thread of mine here:

Note that the 16-valve 190E uses longer headed bolts than the ebay ones that are in that link above.

I actually prefer the 'sunken' rather than the 'flush' look. This is one of the bolts on mine (compared to a 'normal' one).

Those bolts used to snap off fairly regularly, which you would think contradicts people saying wheelbolts never seize in.

Dunno...?? :dk:

As Will said the flush fitting thing depends on the wheels i.e. the short headed one's sit close to flush with the 'standard' 8 hole wheels but are heavily sunken with AMG wheels as seen in the pics BTB posted

These are the bolts that have a bit of a reputation for snapping are they not?

which probably wouldn't have happened if they'd been made with a longer hex head instead of 'waisted' between the head and radius seat. I'm not biting on the copperslip/seizing thing as i really can't be bothered to get into a debate about friction, breakeaway torque or torsional fatigue properties with people that were sick the day physics and maths was being taught at school :p

caps

The bolts on my 260 w124 are looking a bit worn dull .So i have purchased a set of caps to push over the top. It is only looks i am after, and to make them clean looking.

Here's a set of five , original MB : http://m.ebay.co.uk/itm?itemId=400660124844 I would check with seller if they have anymore if you're after 20 . These are original fitment on 8 hole alloys for e500e and 129s, known as double head bolts and ,yes , they can easily snap or twist . Designed to sit flush! Part number shown is the correct MB number , wouldn't hurt to check if available again as they came up back in 2011. I went through this palaver when I fitted EVOs on my e500 . Various bolts are available as discussed here: http://www.500eboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=987 and in particular correct fitment for EVOs , which if I recall correctly you've recently bought a set ?And , btw, they are radius/ball seat type not tapered.

They are the ones MB will try and sell you as will fits, they look awful on a 124 when they stick out.

The double head type bolts are designed to fit flush on 8 hole alloys 16x8" ET34 as fitted standard on early R129s and all E500Es. However, if you fit them on same design 8 hole alloy but 15x6.5" ET44 in size which are on regular 124s like CEs , then i believe they will stick out.
