It would appear that older air-con systems have a now banned type of gas in them, anyone know when the cut-off date was as far as Mercedes cars are concerned ? :dk:

R12 could be found in cars made up to around 1995-96.

Its still possible to source R12 now but its getting rarer and rather costly.

Elsewhere in the world, its use is still abundant.

So does that mean that late W124's & early W202's have it then ?

My 1986 W126 has an R12 system - conversion is on my list of things to do .

At one end of the scale , you can buy a kit of gas/lubricant which you use to flush through the system before refilling with R134a ( cost generally under £100 ) .

When I enquired at a local indy , they would not quote a price but mentioned evacuating system , replacing receiver/drier , changing all seals and then filling with R134a - that was assuming no faults like bust condenser etc .

I have read reports by others on here that air-con specialists can do conversion from £150 or thereabouts .

Every car will be different , depending on condition of system and what is required .

Thanks very much for that info, is there any way you can tell when 'under the bonnet' which gas a system has in it, like a sticker ?

There should be - on my W126 there is a sticker on the landing panel indicating R12 .

I'd expect your C220 to have R134 .

Thanx, although my C220 aint got a/c, im hunting for my 2nd MB !
