Are you interested in the Olympics? Personally I think it's a nonsensical waste of money at a time when we are all tightening our belts and is an ego trip by our "great leaders", not to mention the disruption they will cause. I'm sure there will be other opinions  but would be interesting to see the split. Regards, Jeff.

Just a superannuated school sports day dedicated to all that is wrong with multinational commercialism.

Not often we have unanimity.....I expect one of those argumentative types will be along soon!

I love the way everyone is referring to the dedicated lanes for Olympic traffic as "Zil lanes" harking back to the old communist USSR. When questioned about it the organisers say "yes there will be disruption so everyone should use public transport". what price equality . Watch out for Bob Crow, LOL. Regards, Jeff.

+6 Can't help but think we've much better things to be spending money on than a bunch of 118's who seem to think that being able to run faster than the person next to them is a reason to be given a world stage.

Right now I couldn't care less. Come the actual games, well, I enjoy top class competitive track & field so I will view from the comfort of my living room. Anyone for JEnnis....??? :D

Well at least Lord Coe will make millions from all his connections!

I hate the run up, shouty people trying to compel you to be really excited about the greatest event of the 21st century. I'm not interested in the hype.

I'll watch it selectively when it starts, end enjoy it.

I'd have preferred the French to have 'won', to be honest.

Not a bit interested. :D ^^^ was that a subtle anti-frog comment, Colin? ;)

The French produce excellent wines, they also have a civilised lunch time and treat food with respect. As a nation, the French appear to me to be wonderfully anarchic too.

I'm in the mood for a good argument, it's such a shame that I'll have to agree with the general consensus on here.....:wallbash:

I care even less then all of you!......I'm working through the whole thing on an just plain awfull '2012 games' shift.

In short, not seeing family for the duration of the games, and no, no overtime. Not even a day in a spa ;)

I loved the suggestion that our athletic prima donnas would be unable to participate in the opening ceremony as they may find it "too tiring"

You missed a Question:

"Do you live/work in London and view the wholesale road/lane closures for the exclusive use of the "Olympic Family " as wholly repugnant?"

Could've refurbed a few hospitals and schools for the money spent on this or paid off some of the countries debt, not reduced the armed forces at a time of overstretch, hell a load of much better ways to spend the money than the way it is being spent. :wallbash::wallbash:

Correct me if I'm wrong, but only two major sports events seem to have the capacity to haemorrhage money from a nation's finances - the Olympics and the Soccer World Cup, and both have been mired in massive corruption.
When Wimbledon comes to town, every year, its own sporting body pays for staging it. Same with the Open golf, the F1 GPs etc, etc.
When the Olympics (and the World Cup) comes to town, you and I pay to lay it on - lavishly and with no expense spared.
Incredibly expensive new facilities have to be built, gigantic competitors' "villages" have be created, new transport infrastructures have to be put in place, and so on and so on.
Politicians and the vast industry which has been created to run these events are gold medallists at spending other people's money (quite a lot of it on keeping themselves in a highly paid job). Regardless of whether it can be afforded.
They make outrageous claims about the benefits for us all and the sums frittered away are truly mind-boggling.
The truth is that the Olympic Games has long since outgrown its ideal of AMATEUR sporting excellence. Would you cross the road to watch an archery match. Or a mountain bike race? Would TV, in any other circumstances, show it? Not a chance because nobody's interested.
IMHO, it is time all these minority sports stood on their own feet at their own separate self-funded championship competitions. And left the major events like the athletics to compete in a professional arena - oh dear, I think they already do that - it's called the World Championships...:dk:

Hear-hear! In its present form - waste of [much needed elsewhere] money. And a huge disruption ... I'm actually planning not to be here during and immediately after the Olympics :dk:

Those special "ZIL lanes" reminded me of a joke I heard long time ago about Russian (well, Soviet) Olympic games of 1980 - it goes something like: "Politburo has approved the three-stage plan for the Games: Stage 1 - Preparation; Stage 2 - Hosting the actual Games; Stage 3 - Re-bilding the national economy" ... 11 yrs later that country was no more ... I wonder
