Olympics ! ! Pah ! !

The ones that Nick Mercedes is talking about;

"If people want to run around in circles or throw things, fair play to them, but why should the rest of us sponser their dreary pastimes?"

This goes back to Pheidippides in the spirit of Olympic. Don't you know something about history?

At least it unites the world in a gathering as demonstrated yesterday or the world will be at constant war, is that what you want? :D

If you still don't see the point, then there is no point of GTG, that means you are anti-social.

how can anyone rope any war into the argument about why the tax payer should pay for the olympics.

It would be far better to put up the project earnings and the spotlight on the world is on the country in question as a defence that it produces more income in the long run than the initial expenditure, and that should be something we can all be proud of.

Mind you, is being drunk on the streets, girls fighting passers by, everyone moaning about the draconian police powers, and everyone moaning about the fact we should be freer but they expect those who trangress the laws should be banged up forever or deported as long as we are not picking on me and I should be allowed to get away with things etc etc..... into an olympic sport, we may stand a chance of winning gold then?

And is it me, or is winning silver really such a bad thing? 6bn people in the world, and only 1 other person managed to do better than he/she who came second, is not bad in my book. Why do we get hung up on Gold medals.

Excellent, my issue was that you wrote that most if not all athletes are cheating - that we agree that this is not true is good.

your brother is alluding to human growth hormone the effects of which are different to EPO. suggest he is a poorer source than the media:D
Oiii! ;)
I did say EPO was just ONE substance and I'm positive it is not the most common that is used.

Linford Christie with the anabolic steroid nandrolone. This person allegedly had 100 times the legal limit of this substance. When he won his Olympic silver medal his drugs test was 'suspect' but he managed to convince officials it was a false reading caused by Ginseng tea!! (after Ben Johnson was disqualified for a positive test)

Whilst we accept excuses regarding positive tests, then the sport will never be clean. Hair samples, or DNA testing is the only way to clean up this issue and we must stop employing the best advocates that specialise in smoke screens. Top athletes MUST comply with the codes of conduct, or totally accept the consequences of their actions.

I stand by my point regarding a standard engine competing against the same engine that has been fitted with a super-charger, or a larger fuel tank.

Perfectly reasonable point - its the opposite extreme to a friendly, voluntary coming together and is a measure of how good the olympics are for the world (something which is quickly forgotten).

'price of everything and value of nothing...'

The thing that tickled me was the pundits discussing how the London opening ceremony will measure up against Beijing. Admittedly there is not much else to talk about, but I feel it is missing the point a little. The circus is meant to be the warm up to the main event!

China has certainly made a statement - the world is changing ;)

good point.

perhaps if people were proud of thier own country, they would be grateful for the chance to represent the hopes and aspirations of those who are not talented, capable, able, old enough or young enough to do what they can do in front of the world. And then they would be happy to do it for free, and perhaps this may reduce the desire to perform at any cost.

Kind of like Amature sports events:D

You never know, it might actually get some people to have some pride in their own country and maybe, just maybe, stop whinging about everything, and get behind these people.

I must get these rose tinted spectacles adjusted.

Personally think the Olympics is overblown - but then when you hear a person you know, Katerina Emmons, wins the first gold medal :bannana: , you do tend to think "how cool".

Personally I am enjoying the coverage at the moment as is raining the proverbial cats and dogs so cannot clean the cars like i wanted to.

This is England 2008.

99% of people have no interest in discus throwing or people running around, most kids are only interested in lager and Playstaions.

London Olympics should include snooker, rugby, darts and bowling.

Given the Dome, Wembley and London's gridlock, expect the "games" to be a hugely costly fiasco that brings humilation to our nation....

I bet Nick does not have trouser sizes measured in Postcodes!!:)

Perhaps.

I imagine though when you have your haircut you have similar issues to Homer:

rain has stopped car play, so I'm half watching swimming with Junior B. He's only nearly 9 months old but he thinks its nearly as good as his fabric Jungle Book book.

But then he doesn't pay tax, or know who Gordon Brown is :D

glojo,

cheating with drugs doesn't alter your DNA and testing hair samples isn't robust enough or long lasting enough to stand up in court. you are making it out to be easy to fix the problem - it's not.

when Alain Baxter tested positive at the winter Games in Salt lake did you think he was trying to boost his performance?
i don't by the way and think that the punishment was absolutely correct.

You have been watching me haven't you.

I was busy scraping the hair between posting that, and reading this. And it shines very well indeed ta.

But as my head is not as big as the Moon, you will not be able to see your entire reflection in it. Equator Waist.

I understand where your coming from and the DNA suggestion was me throwing my thoughts into the pot. I was hoping that they could take a DNA sample and then locate traces of DNA samples of 'alien' structures!

After doing further research it looks like the IAAF has started using DNA testing in a different way:

The IAAF’s trap started with its suspicions that whenever foreign sampling officers visited the country for out-of-competition tests, the competitors they were seeking were always immediately available. The IAAF therefore stored the samples after the testing had cleared the competitors and then subjected them to DNA testing. It is alleged that in Soboleva’s case on the five occasions that she submitted urine specimens, the DNA testing showed that they came from different people each time.

Marco Pantani
Someone that abhorred the taking of performance enhancing drugs, condemned those that resorted to cheating and yet..........

EPO is a very specialist drug with a limited , but life saving usage in medicine. WHY is it produced at such high levels and why is it so readily available??

Apologies for being on a soap box, but I hate seeing cheats prosper. Every Olympic competitor should supply a sample of hair.

Regards
John
What we should accept is Russia is no worse than any other nation when it comes to this type of cheating and we need look no further than a minority of our professional football players. Rumours have been rife for many, many years that they do exactly the same things? Rio Ferdinand should have received a life time ban for what he did. Linnford Christie should have been made to surrender ALL his medals, awards and 'Appearance Monies' Once a cheat, always a cheat. If we do not adopt this attitude then we are doing our honest, clean athletes a huge dis-service. I salute the competitors that do not take performance enhancing drugs but I hold in contempt those that allow retired drug cheats to then be allowed to coach up and coming competitors!!! What message are we sending out?

 :D I see Phelps has an under-shot jaw! Pure coincidence or what?

Urine or hair sampling?
I accept what your saying about hair sampling but do we want to stamp out cheating or do we want to play games? If the test proves positive call the competitor in, take another sample and if this proves positive on a recognised drug then tough.......... Game over, life time ban.

The UK Courts recognise the presence of drug traces in human hair as irrefutable evidence. As a single hair sample provides a historic record of drug use of up to 3 months, it not only differentiates between one off and persistent drug usage patterns, it also eliminates the need for costly and disruptive regular urine drug testing. Hair samples are easy to take and to store and transport. Hair Drug testing is also over 5 times more sensitive than urinalysis.

Cheeky chaps. Maybe the Duke of Edinburgh wasn't so out of order after all.............
