Would a USA recall for a problem carry any weight as evidence of a manafacturing fault in the UK?

Possibly, if you have access to confidential MB data that shows that the specific fault caries-over to UK cars VINs, and it is not limited to the US cars VINs listed in the US recall....

Erm it's a partial payment to cover the costs of less mpg and more ad blue whilst ownership of the vehicle purchased continues.

Most of them cover all costs and work on a no win no fee policy, but read the small print, they take anything from 50% to 80% of the winning amount in commission, still worth a shot, nothing to lose.
