I have a 300D W124 that needs to get on the road and as starting has been getting progressively more difficult, I am changing the glowplugs. Four have come out with oodles of penetrating oil soaking for days, 5 is coming with more soaking (I figured that lots of soaking will help, no rush), but number 3 is proving impossible. Why - because I can't get the longer socket necessary to get over the glowplug plus the ratchet because this thing is in the way. It is the circular pod sitting on the injection pump.

A short socket won't get over the glowplug. It looks as though a once cm shorter socket might just fit - any guidance from the experts on cracking this one as I'm not going to give up until all are out!

Not sure I've got a big enough spanner!

Found big enough spanner and got the excresence out of the way. Number 3 plug came out easy peasy.

Sadly Number 5, despite days of extra soaking, just snapped off (or rather top is turning but rest isn't) so that will go up the road to be drilled out, but at least 5 glow plugs are out. I bought a Sealey reamer for the glow plug hole and this is what came out of plug hole 2. I suspect number 5 will be even worse. When the replacements (Beru) are fitted at least there will be a fighting chance of starting being much easier with all that excess carbon out of the way.

I shall use a small amount of copper slip on the plugs so next time (whoever owns the car) glowplug removal will be much more straightforward.

Euro Carp Artists do it again, not once but twice. Correct glowplug on left of each photo, orders as delivered from left to right.

Pleasingly the immense GSF at Heathrow had the correct Beru ones and it's only a mile down the road from Southall, so I took advantage of the trip to have an excellent curry lunch. Still had change from what the MB ones would have cost me!

Hello, can you please tell me what size reamer you have there, cheers

Thankyou for that Charles.
