Thanks both, am I right in saying the tensioner is the same job (labour hours) to get to the chain? Therefore even if it is just the tensioner, you’d do both anyway?

Unusual for a 642 to need a chain at less than 100k miles.

I could hear that perfectly on all the recordings, not sure what everybody's issue was??

yes unfortunately its the chain, same noise on my om651 250cdi when that went.. mine was similar mileage to. I guess Mercedes bean counters forced the engineers to only use the soft chocolate timing chains on their production cars.

I would advise getting it sorted sooner rather than later as a snapped chain is game over.
