Likely to be a fuel problem as suggested, but as an aside a failed crankshaft position sensor will give the same symptoms (cranking without firing at all).
Hi, thanks. The battery was the problem. At first, I had ruled out the battery as the main problem. I called a mechanic to try jump-starting it and failed. He was using special jump-starter battery tools, not ordinary batteries.
Now I know, this big diesel engine cannot do jump start with those tools, it needs a battery that meets its spec, I replaced it with Varta Blue Dynamic with 760CCA. and it started with only 1 try. warmed up for 10 mins, and shut it wodn, then restart after 20 mins, it was ok.
That was 2 weeks ago,
today 3rd May, I managed to start the engine with one crank, and warm up the engine for 10 mins ( idling RPM about 1,000 )
. then I shut down the engine.
10 mins later I tried to restart it, failed. 2 nd time crank, failed to start. i suspect the heat sensor or some sensors not allowing it to start.
then I have this as200 pro scanner, connected to the car, and the DTC read .
current dtc:
p0087 fuel rail /system pressure - too low ,
p2015 intake manifold runner position /switch circuit range/ performance bank 1
p0670 glow plug module control circuit/open
p1101 unknown
it also have some pending DTC, but I didn't record it.
it also mentioned that the engine test abnormal
I deleted the DTC, and unplugged the negative terminal wire for few seconds, then plugged it back.
restart, failed , restart ,second time also failed.
took the scanner to read DTC again,
Current DTC : P1101 ISO/SAE reserved
Pending DTC : P2015 , intake manifold runner position sensor/switch circuit range/performmance bank1
P0670, glow plug control module control circuit/ open
others info : IM READINESS
FUEL : INC
EGR : INC
others : N/A , OK or OFF
about glow plug or the module, I don't think it was replaced before. and mileage is at 190,000 miles ( 250,000 km)
appreciate if you guys can give me some ideas.
thanks
Joe
