ML280 CDI
HI All, good morning,

just bought an old ML280 CDI, 180,000 miles mileage, and it was okay until I brought it back home.
After 3 days of parking, I tried to warm up the engine, and after 5 minutes, the engine died suddenly. After cranking the engine for a few times, about 10 times, it does not start.
The suspect fuel tank was empty. Then, about 10 liters were filled. The engine cranked a few times, but it didn't start at all until the battery lost its voltage.

Can anyone advise?

The vehicle was running OK until it ran out of fuel.
You will probably have drawn air into the diesel fuel system.
Charge the battery and try again.
The air lock will probably clear.
If not, you will have to bleed the air out of the diesel fuel system.

As johnaco say it will will have air in the system as the tank was empty

So Josakya ...
Did you cure the problem ... and How ?

HI Johnsco, i still couldnt start the car, mechanic came to jump start the engine but failed, he tried to check the fault codes, but that scanner couldn't make connection means no data at all.

i took out the gateway module, open it, looks ok, no corrosion. wire connection also looks fine.

Did you buy the car from a trader, or in a private sale?

Likely to be a fuel problem as suggested, but as an aside a failed crankshaft position sensor will give the same symptoms (cranking without firing at all).

Hi Markjay, thank you.
i bought from a private seller, he is a car mechanic.
he got this car from bank auction

I just got this car engine running again , after changing the battery

Finally i got the engine running again, changed the battery.
found that the previous battery was in bad condition.
didn't expect that seller ( mechanic ) is using a battery that was almost in scrap condition, he didn't tell me that very important information. he didn't tell me many things , bad things about this car.
rain water leaking, absorber leaking, fuel consumption very high, etc.
now will check further the problem,

HI , thanks. the battery was the problem. at first I had ruled out battery as the main problem, I had called a mechanic to try jump start it and failed. he was using a special jump starter battery tools , not ordinary battery.
now I know, this big diesel engine cannot do jump start with those tools, it needs the battery that meet its spec, I replaced it with varta blue dynamic with 760CCA.
previous battery also in spec, but further checked shows there were some bloating on the side surface , I only found after took it out. and u can imagine the 22++ kilo weight with the tight space, it hurt my arms and fingers till now.

Hi, thanks. The battery was the problem. At first, I had ruled out the battery as the main problem. I called a mechanic to try jump-starting it and failed. He was using special jump-starter battery tools, not ordinary batteries.
Now I know, this big diesel engine cannot do jump start with those tools, it needs a battery that meets its spec, I replaced it with Varta Blue Dynamic with 760CCA. and it started with only 1 try. warmed up for 10 mins, and shut it wodn, then restart after 20 mins, it was ok.

That was 2 weeks ago,

today 3rd May, I managed to start the engine with one crank, and warm up the engine for 10 mins ( idling RPM about 1,000 )
. then I shut down the engine.
10 mins later I tried to restart it, failed. 2 nd time crank, failed to start. i suspect the heat sensor or some sensors not allowing it to start.

then I have this as200 pro scanner, connected to the car, and the DTC read .
current dtc:
p0087 fuel rail /system pressure - too low ,
p2015 intake manifold runner position /switch circuit range/ performance bank 1
p0670 glow plug module control circuit/open
p1101 unknown

it also have some pending DTC, but I didn't record it.
it also mentioned that the engine test abnormal

I deleted the DTC, and unplugged the negative terminal wire for few seconds, then plugged it back.

restart, failed , restart ,second time also failed.
took the scanner to read DTC again,

Current DTC : P1101 ISO/SAE reserved
Pending DTC : P2015 , intake manifold runner position sensor/switch circuit range/performmance bank1
P0670, glow plug control module control circuit/ open

others info : IM READINESS
FUEL : INC
EGR : INC
others : N/A , OK or OFF

about glow plug or the module, I don't think it was replaced before. and mileage is at 190,000 miles ( 250,000 km)

appreciate if you guys can give me some ideas.

thanks
Joe

.

The car will definitely appreciate a new glow plug module if that’s the original , might be worth glow plugs at the same time if they are 5+ years old .

In the past I've had to run mine for some time without working glowplugs (failed module and failed 'mega fuse') ... just took a little longer to start in cold weather. Never failed to start though.
