Hello,

I have a 2005 w211 estate with 130K miles. I've been experiencing a whole rage of problems which, I believe, are related to the turbo and inlet shutoff motor. Apart from this the car runs well and I really want to resolve the whole problem rather than part of it.

Here are the main symptoms:

1. The car has been through two oxygen sensors in the last 10K miles.
2. When cold, and under hard acceleration, the engine starts to jerk as if an actuator is trying to engage but failing
3. When the car is left to idle for 10-15 mins it starts to emit large amounts of white/blue smoke, this clears once the car has been driven for a while
4. The engine exhaust is generally quite smoky/oily, especially when idling
5. The car has recently gone into limp mode, reporting a fault with the inlet shutoff motor

The steps i've taken so far are:

1. Replace 2no o2 sensors
2. Removed and cleaned the 'charge air pipe' (?)
3. Replaced the seal between the MAF and turbo
4. Removed the intercooler and drained the oil out if it (there wasn't much)

My main questions are:

1. Will replacing the shutoff motor most likely resolve the issue or should I look at replacing the turbo and EGR valve also?
2. Should I try and clean the inlet ports?
3. If I go as far as removing the turbo and shutoff motor, would it also be worth replacing the seals on the oil cooler as well?
4. Is it worth getting a new cartridge for the turbo and trying to recondition it myself?

Thanks for your help,
Alistair

Sounds like turbo, I'd go down the recondition route, use a reputable company, don't do it yourself.

oil from turbo on the om642 will leak onto the actuator possibly shorting the fuse .. this fuse runs the intake port ,egr, boost pressure position. l will be checking that before spending cash.

Hello, have you resolved your smoke problem ?

"When the car is left to idle for 10-15 mins it starts to emit large amounts of white/blue smoke, this clears once the car has been driven for a while."

Please help me, i have the same problem

Please post the outcome here

Hi Gokdag,

Sadly the problem is not fully resolved. I took the turbo off and had it rebuilt and also replaced the inlet shutoff motor (the shutoff motor had failed and I don't think was related to the smoking problem). I'd also taken off the EGR pipe that comes up from the bottom/front of the engine and given that a clean, although it wasn't particularly dirty.

The turbo had a missing vane on the inlet turbine and the actuator was playing up, so it needed sorting. The car runs a lot better now, with a lot less smoke but still, when left to idle for a long period (10 mins +) it starts to smoke heavily - the smoke is white/grey.

I can answer no4 for you:

i replaced the turbo core myself. I found one from a turbo specialist in the States for less than $200 and was completely balanced and guaranteed.

The job itself is quite straight forward although I did struggle trying to get some of the torx bolts at the back, where the turbo bolts to the exhaust loose.

Unfortunately replacing the turbo didn't fix my problem, which is excessive smoking caused by oil in the intercooler, which in turn is caused by excessive crankcase pressure, i.e.. worn piston rings.

A missing vane from the turbine disk? Where did it go? Into your engine?

Perhaps that's the cause of your excessive smoke, a damaged bore or piston.

what do you do now to solve the problem? what is wrong in your opinion?
I bought a new turbo , I'll change it in a few days.

You have to change your entire turbo ??

I do not think of having an used(worn out) piston(valve) because my engine works as a clock
