Hi all
I have an 09 plate clk 320 cdi with the om642 v6 engine and was wondering when Mercedes’ replaced the oil cooler seals with the upgraded purple ones? And also if mine has the swirl flaps also?
Also when does the oil seals usually go and would u repair the swirl flap if need be at the same time?
Does anyone know a good mechanic to fix mine wiling to travel but not crazy distance from Northamptonshire area and London area if need be
Thanks

You will still have orange seals in 2009 buddy (it was 2012 ish ) .
Where in London for a specialist are you ?

Morning mate
I’m based in Northamptonshire area where I live but I work in north London Wembley area but I can travel most places if a courtesy car is provided so I can get home or if they can do it in a day lol
Thanks

My father's 07 had 135,000 on the clock , no signs of oil leaks . Pot luck I guess.

Mine is a 12 plate and still had the old seals so yes, an 09 will definitely have them - but you may be lucky.
Mine went at around 85k if I remember, 1 X inlet manifold was replaced, flaps were hardly moving at all completely coked up.
Don't think you have to replace the manifold though, plenty of info on here...

I doubt the swirl flaps are broken, loose and worn link arms i expect. Also the manifolds are probably carboned up and need cleaning and the heat exchanger underneath as well, egr pipe too.

It took me just under two hours to have everything removed from my car when i started, but i spent a couple of days cleaning the manifolds and other parts. It can be done in two days complete, depends on how much you are willing to spend also if the garages are booked up.

I took lots of photos and updated the thread as much as I could, to be honest I wish i had been more detailed in it, showing every step as i went along and some video but i didnt have the time and it was bloody cold!! working on the car in the winter, wet and cold.

It is a job that you can do if you feel competent enough, or if you can get someone to help you.

Also theres some tools you will need as well.

Check the thread through and ask question if i can help or others can they will pitch in with advice.

If you get your manifolds off, stick them in a box and send them to me.... i have a problem with needing to clean the car parts ;) lol I can make them all shiny for you

Ok thanks guys
It hasn’t gone yet but is it worth me doing as preventative maintenance or just leave it till it goes? Also do they tend to go completely or does it start with a drip then worsens? Lol

one thing will lead to several things, it is upto you how long you leave it, what you are comfortable with.

With pretty much little service history for mine it was a no brainer to do what i did on mine.

Some just keep going without leaking. I would say don't fix what ain't broke. But if you need to do the seals then it really is worth doing a proper clean and refurb of the inlet manifolds whilst they are off. It will feel like a new car!

If it is not leaking at the moment I would wait. Owning a +10 year old MB usually presents plenty of opportunities to spend your money! As others have said the oil cooler seals quickly turns into a mini top end overhaul so even just the cost of parts soon adds up. If the swirl flap motor goes you can live without it by fitting a resistor in its place until you decide what to do. Same with the oil cooler seals, keep an eye on the underside by taking the shield off once in a while especially if it starts using oil. By all accounts some never need doing, just depends on your luck. My 2010 is not using oil but the swirl flap motor has just died.

In my experience cars with DPF fitted are more prone to the seals failing. I’ve plenty of customers with early om642, no DPF, still on the original seals, no oil leaks. It’s to do with diesel dilution of the oil that hastens the demise of the seals

Ok
Thanks everyone for the help
With these swirl flaps how do u know if they’re not working? Also can u see them to check?

The swirl flap actuator and rods in in the v under a few other bits so you cannot see them as such. The top of the motor is just under the turbo inlet so you can see it when you take the batwing maf inlet pipe work off. The orange seal on the turbo can leak oil onto the motor which is a failure mode. Changing the seal regularly and being careful when refitting it will minimise this risk. There is also a seal on the pcv hose into the maf pipe just before the turbo. Make sure this is good and pushed in properly as this can drip oil onto the actuator area too.

Ok

If they aren’t working the car will go into limp mode with a fault code

I have seen one flap fall off and kill the engine. Did loads of damage too.
