Hi guys, hope you all are well and safe.
I have an oil leak in my c220, I’ve been in 2 different places to have an opinion (one Merc specialist and one general indie) and they are saying that MIGHT be the the oil sump and quoted £800 to fix it.

In my opinion is the oil filter and cooler housing from where the leak is coming. Does anyone have any suggestion for a good merc specialist for Edinburgh and around areas?

And any suggestion on what the issue might be or what should I do (trust my guts or the mechanic) more than welcome.
Thanks for your time and help.

Is there visual evidence as to where the oil is being lost as this may point to where its leaking. Something at the back of my mind about the OM651 SUMP PAN being plastic?

oil cooler maybe, have a search on here I'm sure I have read somewhere that the oil cooler hoses can leak

No is not plastic, the evidence that I see is that if the oil was from the sump pan should be going only down and not up.
I can see evidence higher than the pan, and the problem is that I don’t have access coz is everything packed in there.

Don’t know pal, I’ll get under it tomorrow again and check it.
Any trustworthy mechanic around Edinburgh?
I came up from London 8 months ago and haven’t had any experience with the mechanics around here.

Yes the 651 has a plastic sump, over-tightening the sump plug is what normally causes issues.

I respect that, the point is that the last oil change is done from me and I extracted it.
So it hasn’t been touched for 2 years now and the leak appeared the last month or so! I will attach photos tomorrow to show from where I think the leak might be starting. Nobody can say for sure though. And they are saying £800 to change the sump tray and take it from there which is not convenient as might not be that.

£800? The oil sump is only around £100 from MB so thats £700 in labour?

Yes mate, exactly that is what they said.
That’s why am looking for any trustworthy mechanic in the area.
And if someone could tell that is that 100% I could pay it and that’s it. The problem is that the guy said might be that, and if go we will see what else might be!(pay again is my understanding).

Does sound a lot!

What not take it to the main dealer (when they are open) and simply ask for a price to fix?
Mercedes at Newbridge is only one I'd recommend but they will charge more than an Indy.

If they don't fix it and you have paid for a repair then you are entitled to go back and ask them to carry out a further repair or refund you. Quite simply you want a price to diagnose and repair the car not to guess, if guessing is the game you can do that yourself.

Thank you mate, appreciated.
There I will end up probably.
I was hoping that someone might have any good suggestions for a mechanic around Edinburgh (max. Glasgow) for the job to avoid the main dealer.

Problem with the OM651 is they are a real pain when they have a problem, leaks or other.

A lot of parts have to come off to gain access for some very simple jobs sometimes.
Unless you have someone that knows the engine well I'd take my chance with at the very least a price from the main dealer.

I bet its the oil filter housing. We have done a few now. Horrible job as space is very tight.

Just went to an other mechanic today and confirmed both. Oil filter and sump tray. He said will start with the sump tray and once is open from under will have a look in the filter as there will be more visibility.
At least he asked for £450 for the oil sump tray and not £800.
Fingers crossed next week will be ready.
I’ll update you with the results

I know MB Grangemouth is Arnold Clark, but their Service Reception guy, Stuart, is an ex mechanic and knows his stuff. I've never found them to 'try it on' and they don't overdo costings for jobs that they know can be done in less than the 'book' time. One of my cars was into Newbridge at least twice with a thermostat problem which was eventually fixed at Grangemouth. Newbridge also wanted to change rear pads and discs at another car's first service which from memory was 12k miles. They went on to the second service and Grangemouth only needed to change the pads and that at a price I couldn't grumble at.

Having said all that many folks don't rate MB Glasgow and I certainly wouldn't rate their sales team, but, for the benefit of the OP, McNeil's in Shettleston (just off the M80) gets a good name and they have done work for me in the distant past and I would go back to them.

Any conclusion on this as it sound like my car. I have changed the seals on my oil filter housing but its not cured it. Looking at doing my sump at the weekend.

I’ve changed both and ended up with £1.2k bill.
The worst thing is that a week ago it started leaking again. Don’t really know what to do.
