OM651 Engine Seized

Hi all,

Bought a W212 as a non runner sight unseen and given the description, sounded very much like a starter motor problem.

However, having just checked the engine, appears it is seized. No idea what has caused this.

Checked the oil, it is like gunge.
Checked the oil filter, dirty but no metal.

Pulled the injectors and poured diesel down the ports.

First round,
Cylinder 1 filled then drained
Cylinder 2 would not fill to the brim at all - Probably a litre of diesel
Cylinder 3 would not fill to the brim at all - Probably a litre of diesel
Cylinder 4 filled then drained

3 Days later

Second Round 7
Cylinder 1 filled then stayed filled - has not drained
Cylinder 2 filled then drained
Cylinder 3 filled then partially drained
Cylinder 4 filled and drained

Crankshaft still won't budge after a week of soaking.

Has anyone had a similar experience of this? If so, was it fixed or is it now just toast?

If the cylinders would not fill and hold diesel at least for a while, does that not mean that there is severe cylinder/piston ring wear? If the oil is like gunge it could be lack of servicing or overheating. Either way this sounds like a dead engine. Much cheaper and faster to source a used one imho. Good luck

Timing chain broken or jumped a cog , valves hitting pistons , pistons holed ?

Can you borrow a borescope to look inside the cylinders for damage ? Injector ports ought to be big enough .

Only other way is to remove the cylinder head and inspect for damage .

You can get a cheap endoscope that'll fit your phone for a tenner

This engine may well be one of those that you shouldn't start on.

There are too many temperamental hi risk components on a well maintained one.

Thanks All, got a scope but the ports are too small to get through. Will probably just see if I can sell it, or break it if not. Appreciate the help!
