Guys I have this code showing on my obd, any tips suggestions on what it could be?

very likely intake manifold stud is broken.

common issue.

a smoke test will reveal. any good garage will have a smoke machine.

Just a bad design. Vibration causes the end of the bolt to snap off into the engine head. It’s always the same bolt too!

Is it a big job to fix? What sort of money does it cost and will it happen again

It’s a tricky job. About 350 from memory. Shouldn’t happen again.. we use a better bolt so never seen it reoccur.

Could a DIY mechanic do it? Any how too's and how can I tell if it's definitely the issue? It's late here but had a quick look under bonnet and hose that comes off turbo has black crud over it and the turbo housing so I'll remove clean and refit tightly and see if it helps

Really should do a smoke test before diving in. Could be a boost pipe split possibly but I’m sure that will give a different code.

The intake manifold is not a hard job but quite fiddly. The broken stud would need extraction from the engine head which may be difficult if you’ve never done it. A left handed drill bit makes it easier.

I’m sure someone did a write up on here...

Hi all so had a closer look today as couldn't sleep with all the intake manifold bolt horror stories and came across this pipe going to intercooler. On closer inspection although I haven't removed it there seems to be a same split around an inch in length at the top of pipe. underneath where that pipe is is very grubby/cruddy would this throw the p2279 code up? Would anyone have a part number?

If that is split that’s certainly the first thing to change. Check other side also as that’s the more common one to split.

Other side I presume same location albeit on driver side and going into intercooler? Can you see it from above? I haven't access to a ramp etc

Yes. It’s normally red. Just have a feel with your hand to see if you can find a split or if the hose is excessively softened

I see it mate and there's a big cruddy oily patch on that so maybe leaking I'll have it up on ramps Wednesday evening and take them off and have a good look before ordering any parts etc fingers crossed it's this and not that bolt issue thank you for all your help so far, I'll update you once I see them off

Hi had exact same code last week. It was the intercooler pipe as shown earlier. Mb specialist did a smoke test and it showed up straight away. Cost was about £180 using genuine mb replacement pipe including star diagnosis, smoke test and new pipe. Took them about 30 mins to replace once confirmed.. let us know how you get on

Thanks Tony yes I will do but won't be till Wednesday night was it the red intercooler pipe on drivers side or black one on passenger side leaking on yours?

It was the passenger side on mine. The mechanic did a video showing the smoke billowing out.. No wonder it was down on power..lol
Cheers
