Hi all
Look like my Om651 s204 c250cdi water pump has started to leak. I noticed the aux belt was a bit noisy after being started in the mornings. After checking I noticed water droplets on the edge of it and I could see a faint trickle mark down the front of the water pump behind the pulley and small amounts of water around the area. So I am pretty sure it's started to fail.

My question is are after market pumps ok? With mercedes dealers being closed, I need to get the car sorted so I can take regular supplies to my elderly mother.
Is it OK to get one from euro car parts?

Can any body give me a ball park figure what an independent garage would charge to fit this?
Cheers

Cheers you kind of said what I knew deep down...I was just wanting to get the car sorted asap.. But the more I look into it the more I kind of realized OEM is the only way. It seems as though they have redesigned the water pump and use a metal casing now..
Thanks fo rthe reply.. I'll have to wait and get it done properly. :)

Anybody know a ball park figure on what it would cost for a merc specialist to fit a genuine water pump? what have others paid for this job? Just wondering so I can plan my finances a bit.

Thanks

While you are in there do the tensioner, belt and idler pulleys.

I'll certainly get them checked but wont replace unless needed. Cars only on 96K. Just want to know how much the water pump is going to set me back LOL, times are tough at the moment... :)

Last pump we bought I think was around £130

I did mine at 104 K they were all rattling once I took the tension off them, the WP had a touch of play and a squeaky bearing but no leak. I left the idlers sat on the bench and after a couple of days they had both seized up solid. I used a genuine MB pump, everything else was SKF including the alternator clutch pulley that changed for good measure.

Ah cheers I'll check when they are off then, To be fair there is no noise from the front end apart from the belt make a slight whoosh noise due to water being on it.
I have just ordered the pump from Edinburgh Mercedes ebay shop. Very helpful they were. £150 delivered which isnt bad for genuine parts I thought especially during these strange times.

Thanks guys!

It is an easy to moderate DIY job if you wanted to do it yourself.
Much easier if you have hoseclip pliers but doable even if you don't.

You will have to drain the coolant so it a good opportunity to replace it.
Did you order MB concentrated coolant with the pump?

I am tempted to have a go as I like to get involved.
Do I need the MB coolant or can I use a substitue?

cheers

HI Guys

One thought, I have ordered the water pump but are there any other "O" rings or seals or gaskets I need to order? I watched a guy on you tube do the swap and there looked like there was an O ring needed on the long left hand pipe from the pump to the engine hoses. Any body know the part codes I need to order if needed?
Any advice appreciated!

Thanks

I don't think you will need anything else apart from the MB coolant pump.
I changed one and didn't need any other parts.
I found that that the most difficult part is getting the hose clips off. I didn't have a hoseclips pliers at the time though.
Best of luck with it.

Hi,

I looked at the video of the German mechanic replacing the OM651 coolant pump again -- I assume that is the one you are talking about. Actually, I find the way the camera attached to his head moves about makes me feel sick !!

Anyway, I sacrificed my stomach to view it to see the O ring he replaced.
I do see it and I didn't replace it when I did mine. I doubt if it is essential but it certainly won't do any harm to replace it.
Mine doesn't leak there (or anywhere) since I replaced the pump.

Ah yes thatds the one I watched, luckily I didnt feel ill..lol

Thanks for the advice then, I shall go ahead and get it changed, its still not arrived from Merc Edinburgh yet, hopefully it will be here this week.

Hi Guys

I have seen sense and decideed to get the idler pulleys changed as well. Does anybody know the part numbers for the ones I need. I think there are two idlers and a tensioner? If I am not mistaken. Would like to get them ordered asap. Thanks
