I'm looking for a new car sub. Currently i've got a boxes 12" sony xplod. it's started rattling and so its time for a new one. I really dont like having the box in the boot as it weighs a ton :( is there any way of getting a sub that doesnt need an enclosure?

Was thinking of having it either bolted so it points through the first aid space in the parcel shelf, or to the back with a hole in the fire-wall so that it points through the ski hatch?

I've already got an amp, and so just need a subwoofer, but what's out there?

Any ICE specialists here? If you could throw some ideas/pictures of installs at me it'd be great.

Cheers :)

A sub wouldn't work very well without the enclosure, and to be honest I don't know of any at all that are designed to work without one.

You could try one of these type - they tend to be more compact than a full box:

You can, they are known as 'free-air subs' or Infinite Baffle design.

A guy did a simple conversion on his W211 E500. But it does involve trimming of some metal. You don't have to do this if you could make a mount to house the sub underneath the rear shelf.

I've got no problem cutting the metal apart, i've got an Olly for all that! :D

Just got to find the right sub to go in there. Anyone know what brands to look out for/avoid as a quick reference? I'll do a search for a free-subs then and pick something up.

Think i'll leave the first aid lid over the sub (with lots of rattle-free tape to keep it quiet!) so that you cant tell it's got a sub through the rear window.... 12" speaker sticking through the parcel shelf may look a bit barry!

Cheers for your help guys, when i fit it i'll post some pictures as i imagine having a seperate boot compartment is a common problem for mercs
