Options for retro fitting Nav system to e55

Hi Chaps/Chappesses

If I buy a 1999-2000 ish E55 without a navigation system - what are the options/costs related for retro fitting a system? Is it better to buy a MB approved one, or should I just opt for a 'HALFORDS' special. I would prefer not to have one stuck to the windscreen, instead I would look to integrate it into the dashboard.

Any ideas/thoughts or has anyone done this and care to share their experience?

All the best

I think it might be worth PM-ing Alfie - he's the man on COMAND!!

With regards to alternatives, I'm not a massive fan of the stick-on types either - although they are spectacularly good value.

Might be worth considering something like a Becker head unit CD-player that has in-built sat-nav. Sort of half way house, for probably half way money, so worth considering.

Noooo! :D :D I know Silvertank is financially well endowed but I bet Alfie will be cheaper? (Or else  :D )

Is it comand.co.uk?

My dealer said that they have just had an ML retro fitted with command by Braybrookes and the cost to them (the dealer) was almost the same as that in the MB options list, its a good starting cost and you know its good over 70 MB dealers use them.

Alfie should get the business over Braybrooks every time!

Braybrooks are indeed very good, I cannot fault them. Neil Braybook is a very knowledable guy and offers many many good services.

However, we will ALWAYS undercut them on price. Not service, just price.

Edit; We will always charge the customer less than the original option cost and/or the cost to the dealer.

Depends on the price... I have a Nav sys in my W210 but my Garmin 330 is so much better that I lug it in instead.

Depends how much you want comand...

Braybrooks quoted me £800 for Linguatronic! ;) I wonder if they have recently had an attack of the guilts? Before anyone asks, I already have the Hands free wiring, concealed microphone etc

Which leads nicely into my next question. How much to retrofit Linguatronic to my ML. It has comand and phone already.

What year is your ML.

The official answer is for the last generation, its impossible. But saying that, I have done so in my wife's 2002 ML - as it is available as an option on US vehicles. I think by 2004 (the last year) the wiring was no longer always installed.

You do need a 2002 ML really as the mounting holes and cutouts for the lever are there in the steering column & cowl, although with some careful engineering there is someone who has added it to an older one.

Then you need to work out the wiring under the seat and make a loom - the controller installs there - the difficult bit is the pins for the connector that connects to the body wiring loom - I do have a few spare if anyone decides to undertake this.
Somewhere on the net is a document by someone who has done this to an MY2000 ML ...

I never got around to documenting what I did completely - however there is a picture of the under-seat bit with the voice recognition module in my 'retrofit UHI to older ML' document at www.mercupgrades.com
