Inspired by a thread on another forum I use, I thought I'd pop up a question about us, the owners of a quality marque.

How seriously do you take other material items in your life ?

Hifi
TV
Camera
Fashion
Grooming
Computing
Home
Watches

etc. etc. etc.

Are we creatures of good taste, followers of style and quality or just muppets that follow adverts ?

Hifi - important

TV - has to be decent picture but not greatly interested

Camera - important for the limited use I give it

Fashion - what's that? Do they sell that in Jermyn Street?

Grooming - that's what Trumpers is for

Computer - part of the Borg.

Home - is useful, not tidy though

Watches - half the time I forget to wind it.

Opera - more than a matter of life and death

Cricket - ditto

Wine and food - more important than either of the above.

Books ditto.

Hi-Fi ... Linn
TV ... Sharp
Camera ... Canon
Fashion ... Don't care
Grooming ...Don't care
Home ... Three
Computer ... Acer
Watch ... Broken
...

Started listing mine and then it looked like an inventory for house burglars.

Hifi (don't have one - plug iPhone into speakers)
TV As long as it's crisp and not too big for the room.
Camera (Important)
Fashion (Important - natty clobber makes me feel great!)
Grooming (Important)
Computing (Apple)
Home (Show home)
Watches (I have a few, but I don't spend bug bucks - too scared of damaging)

I suppose the limiting factor is how much disposable income you have - or how much you are prepared to smack on the plastic.
Hifi is a must have - but it doesn't need upgrading as many would have you believe. Buy GOOD stuff and it will last many years.
TV is important. But again it doesnt need a fortune spent.

The law of diminished returns kicks in quite early with most items.

Watches and cars are notable exceptions and spending "more" does get perceptive improvements.

Hifi: Bose
TV: Must be HD and above 40"
Camera: Not that bothered
Fashion: Love to look good
Grooming: Just a decent hair cut
Computing: Couldn't give a monkeys
Home: Important, love furnishing them and making my home the best it can be.
Watches: I have two good watches. Don't need more
Beer and food: Very important
Karting: What I am put here to do.

I have an expensive wife, what little I can hide from her usually has an engine.

Hifi-would like to upgrade, use a home theatre kit connected to PC as have a lot of MP3. Cost about £500 in 2003

Grooming a £10 hair cut once a month
Computing A 6yr old PC but was dear at the time. Thinking about a Mac pro but cant bring myself to drop £2k on a computer, but spend a lot of time at one.

Not very. My main indulgence is my motoring library, which I tend to replenish every 2-3 years.

As for the other categories listed:

Hifi - was mainstream, but these days I find iTunes more convenient than swapping CDs
TV - bought a Panasonic a couple of years ago to replace a 30-year-old Grundig that was becoming temperamental
Camera - I've got a point-and-shoot thingy somewhere, but now tend to use my iPod
Fashion - tends to pass me by
Grooming - I'll leave that to the stableboy...
Computing - bought an all-in-one touchscreen model from a shop I'd never heard of; does the job
House - walls, roof, that kind of thing; been in the family for generations
Watches - haven't worn (or owned) one since I was about twelve
Forum - the best or nothing

No real money spent on any of that stuff (too boring).
