MY 97 E230 SEEMS TO HAVE BLOWN A HEAD GASKET. JUST DONE 138k . STARTED LOOSING WATER FROM EXPANSION TANK SLOWLY, OIL STILL OK AT THAT STAGE THEN WENT TO START ONE MORNING WITHOUT LUCK. APPARENTLY WATER IN CYLINDER i THINK ENGINEER WAS SAYING, HOWEVER WENT BACK 8 HOURS LATER AND IT STARTED STRAIGHT AWAY. CHECKED OIL AGAIN HAVING DONE AROUND 50 MILES AND 4 PINTS OF WATER :( AND LOOKS LIKE A MILKY COFFEE. MAIN STEALER WANTS £810 BEFORE ANY SKIMMING OR OTHER COMPLICATIONS. MB INDEPENDANT ARE TALKING UNDER £500

Tough luck mate.

By the way please use lower case as Capitals are difficult to read and classed as SHOUTING. :(

that really should have been the point where you parked it up and started shopping for quotes. a cylinder full of water can do untold damage to an engine - we are talking possible damage to rings, con rods and big end bearings as it compresses at a different rate to petrol in the cylinder, hopefully you've avoided anything too costly but I'd be tempted to get it checked over
£500 for a cylinder head isn't cheap but it's not expensive either considring the amount of work involved and if it's done properly it should be good for another 150k at least

Ref CAPITALS

Sorry about that Brian. I was a forum virgin. I wont let it happen again. :)

Could save yourself some hard earned ready stuff by doing it yourself. Ok may take a couple of days, or a weekend but at least you will know what has been done. You also get the chance to look at other things on the car too and rectify them without having to rely on an 3rd party to point you in the direction of the nearest cash machine

nasty biz - I blew my head gasket on the MGF - £1000 later  - and I was lucky coz I didn't wreck the engine. I saw the temp jump up and stopped immediately, otherwise would have been serious trouble. Only on 32k miles too :( so <£500 is not bad going. Good luck - hope you get it sorted quickly :)

PS - welcome to the forum :D
