Ok update

Took the car to Gary Warburton Merc specialist in Fleetwood.
They have done work on the car in the past. They gonna look at it for me the car lost no water on the 11 mile drive to them but fans are on constantly.
They also said the car was knocking when they worked on it last year so on that one I'm too blame for being deaf and not noticing DOH...
They said apart from the knocking engine it was a good car when they worked on it last year so fingers crossed it not a total loss.

So a specialist MB mechanic who knows the car has told you it's a good car and you accept it is your own fault for not hearing the knocking, yet you still feel the seller owes you something and, in spite of having slagged him/her off on the phone and questioned their integrity on a public internet forum, you aren't prepared to apologise and accept that you haven't been ripped off after all?

I treat a private sale as a ‘sold as seen’ thing, even if the car broke down on the way home I wouldn’t expect the seller to pay for it...

You saw/test drove the car and bought it in the current condition, anything that happens after the sale isn’t the sellers fault, and any fault you didn’t pick up could have also been missed by the seller as he/she also probably isn’t a mechanic.

^^^This. As much as you may seem aggrieved at what may or may not be wrong with your purchase, unfortunately thats part and parcel of buying a used car privately, as is the associated normally 'reduced' price in comparison to a similar/same car being sold on a garage forecourt.
That's not to say IF the seller knew he was selling a faulty car, his morale compass is obviously in need of re calibration.
I would heed the advice being offered here, especially from Jay regarding getting certain aspects of the car checked out before resigning yourself to the fact you have bought a lemon.

Hope you manage to get some good news soon and the car is performing as it should be, so you can enjoy it :)

UPDATE
Spoke to the Merc specialist the cooling system is back up and running it was a fan fault (they have not told me what} they cant find a leak anywhere which is odd as the other mechanic said when he looked at it after i dropped and it had sat for 3 days there was no water in it and i had topped it up ?
The other thing they waiting for part to arrive is some emmission thing (i didnt catch the name) thats on the manifold that they said why there was no power ?
But anyway things are looking up have not done anything about the knocking but im deffo thinking its injector knock and will try and sort that once i got the car up and running. Also asked them to MOT it.

EGR - Don't those things have a reputation for plugging up?

Other mechanic was obviously hoping to ruin you in repair costs or buy it off you on the cheap!

All's well that ends well.... as others have said.... if you buy private... know what you're looking at and do your homework for potential issues and check all those when you get there... no matter how long it takes....if you want more piece of mind buy from a reputable dealer/independant (plenty on here) who'll stand by their car and give you a warranty....

Excellent news, don’t forget to let us know how the knocking turns out and of course a picture of the car when it’s well again [emoji106]

I never slagged him off on the phone in fact i was trying to be very reasonable he was the one with the bad attitude also the comment about his E class mysterously having 4 flat tyres was a joke. The car does have numerous problems which im told by the merc specialist he knew about as they did some work on the car before he assured me there was nothing wrong with the car.

If he has knowingly misrepresented the condition, put in a claim for the repair costs via the small claims track (Moneyclaim online). Make a note of what you have been told, when and by whom, and you may well have a decent chance of winning. Old cars have issues, but I loathe liars.

From previous posts, I gather that the OP did not ask any questions, and the seller did not volunteer any information... ?

Can we put this to bed now im just now interested in getting the car working and usable just not really interested in trying anymore with the seller its not worth the hassle.

UPDATE:
Finally picked up the car today after two weeks of it being in for repair. The emulator worked and no malfuction lights according to the Merc specialist said it was the swirl flap motor going u/s that made the fans run constant and there is no water leaks (still does not explain the other garage i took it too saying there was no water in it after it sitting for 3 days).
The knocking unfortunately is not injectors specialist says its either small end or cam as its for a loud ticking that knocking ? Otherwise the car drives lovely everything works and got 44mpg coming over from Fleetwood to Darlington. The only small fault i can find it the indicator stalk wont stay clicked on right hand turn seems ok clicked on the left.

The tapping might be from dodgy hydraulic tappet/s which is a "relatively" simple fix--- small end not so simple!
Here's an example of hydraulic tappets from an earlier single cam engine.

Start with the hydraulic lifters. - You can easily whip the valve cover off and check them without disturbing much.

Obviously it is a bit of a pain to take the cam out to replace one (or more). - Can they be shimmed? Usually that's only for mechanical lifters (which by nature are more noisy), but it might be a workaround.

I have seen a couple of these that knock from cold, it sounds like the engine is ****ed to be polite.

Both cases turned out to be a small leak on the water pump seal.

What we were hearing was the pump blades spinning with no water in the pump, it wasn't until it gets up to temp and the system bleeds itself again, filling up the pump itself, that the noise settles.

I was literally putting in a couple of hundred ml in every couple of thousand miles, and could not see a leak at all.

In the end it was was changing a belt when we noticed play in the pump and changed it, sorted the noise 100%.

Now, it may not be this, but worth considering if the noise persists?
