Quote: ITV News understands that all P&O Ferries staff have been made redundant with immediate effect.

The company is set to use an agency to keep their ferries running and current staff will be able to apply to the agency for work.

Sad news - P&O Ferries currently operates four routes:

  • Dover to Calais
  • Hull to Rotterdam
  • Liverpool to Dublin
  • Cairnryan, Scotland, to Larne, Northern Ireland

It scrapped a route between Hull and Zeebrugge, Belgium, in January last year

Don't forget for your channel crossings there's always Brittany Ferries

I prefer the Brittany Ferries longer routes anyway, especially the Commodore Class suites and the buffet starter in the restaurant.

Nothing in that ITV article which actually suggests what is happening - redundancy or otherwise.

Whatever is happening, P&O are keeping it very tightly controlled at the minute. All we know is that their vessels have been ordered to port.

Everything else is just rumour.

I have it on good authority that P&O Ferries are being "Commandeered" and are to be used in the "Retake Ukraine Flotilla" being launched in April the 1st! ;)

Are the sacked staff represented by the RMT? If they are it’s interesting to see how easy it is to get rid of them. This comes after 2 days of strikes by tube drivers who are also represented by the RMT.

We fly to Poitiers or La Rochelle and hire a car.
Nice and easy. 👍😎

I hear rumours that

1. A major shareholder in DP world is Russian
2. Last Friday, Russia made approaches regarding ferry routes in the Black Sea

It is just that - rumours - but could this be an example of revenge for sanctions?

According to Companies House:
  • DP World is owned (significant control) by The Peninsular and Oriental Steam Navigation Company
  • In turn, they are owned (significant control) by Government of Dubai
No reference to anything Russian as far as I can tell? Think it's just conspiracy theories?

Surprised that it’s taken this long.

Given the appalling fall in cross-channel traffic, there’s massive overcapacity out there.

(Fully appreciate the freight element but the Tunnel has immense spare capacity)

'Cash rich parent company could save P&O Ferries'

The UK is rapidly being turned into a third world country by these unfettered foreign multinationals

Surely that should be the other way round? P&O are a subsidiary of DP World

DP World:

Peninsular & Oriental:

"Who owns P&O?
Although originally a British owned company, P&O Ferries was sold to DP World, an international Emerati logistics company based in Dubai in 2006.

It was taken over by investment company Dubai World shortly after.

Then, in February 2019 DP World bought P&O Ferries back from Dubai World in a deal costing an estimated £322million."

The Sun

P&O is owned by DP World, the multi-national ports and logistics company based in Dubai.

A spokesman for P&O, which is owned by Emirati logistics giant DP World,

On 20 February 2019, DP World announced it had repurchased P&O Ferries from Dubai World in a £322m deal.
