A few years ago I noticed some tiny pimples in the paint.
After showing our bodyshop it was confirmed that this is caused by trapped moisture in the paint.

I hadnt had the car fully painted in my ownership so it was from a long time ago.

This year we decided to tackle it. We were hoping it would be under just the top layer. Unfortunately the moisture was found to be on the metal.

So its a bare metal respray.

Its going to take some time to remove all the paint.

So far the body looks good. The bodyshop says they found filler where there was none necessary! No dent or corrosion at all.
    Weird what some bodyshops do.

That's a beautiful looking car, Jay. The Pagoda is one of the most elegant designs ever in my book, and that colour's lovely.

    Cheers,

    Gaz

Bodyshops in the UK drive me crazy. Trapped moisture and unnecessary use of filler is a common problem.

Nice Car Jay! IRRC most of these started out with aluminium bonnets, bootlids, doorskins and tonneau covers but these may have been replaced with steel later on the production line ??

I assume that most of the entrained moisture comes via a poorly dried compressed air supply in the spray booth. It might just be down to the day the car was sprayed [ high humidity] or failure to change the drier cartridge on a regular basis before spraying.

So that is what it is. Was respraying a wing on my 116 450SE and some time after noticed pimples in the paint. Decided to redo and flatted the paint down to show that it was under the primer. So it was back to metal and start again. Often wondered what caused it and now I know - thanks. By the way the Pagoda is probably the most beautiful Mercedes made although I would really like a W111 3.5 Coupe.

The car featured on that show should really have been scrapped, having in excess of 100 'repair' patches on it, but the guys did an amazing job. Far too expensive for an individual to have had restored, but still, even a £100,000 restoration is very cheap in TV production terms for a syndicated show... (Just wish they'd show more of the car resto rather than the sentimental clap trap accompanying it...)

Looking good in primer Jay, even better with paint hopefully. Oh, and somebody's left a hammer and dolly on the boot lid... sack 'em for that. :)

    J Type Bedford I believe...

    Hi All,

Sorry for the lack of updates on this.

Summer got very busy for us and this had to take a back seat for me.

The bodyshop have been working all through summer to get the car ready.

The plan was to have it all done by August but unfortunately the welder couldnt get onto the car for weeks. So we found someone else and he did a cracking job.

There was a small hole in the inner wing and what I thought was a small hole in the drivers floor.
Unfortunately the floor turned out to have extended up to the sill, and so the whole drivers floor panel was cut out, fabricated using good thick steel and welded in.
The sheet metal work was fantastic in my opinion. He formed all the same grooves and factory shapes into the new floor. Much better than buying a new panel from Mercedes or aftermarket as they are made from baked beans cans nowadays, in my opinion.
I seem to have lost the pictures of the floor being done, but will post some once I have the car back... although it is all painted now so not much to see!
