Paint bubbling and cracked on 98 SLK 230 Rocker Cover.

Was wondering how long the paint or corrosion warranty was on a 98 SLK. Never seen this before, the paint on the rocker/cam cover is bubbling and is cracked and pealing in one place. A minor thing I know but it's bugging me. The car has 44000 miles with Full Mercedes Service History. I read somewhere that Mercedes have a 30 year corrosion warranty so would this apply here or was the warranty given with later cars? Thanks in advance.

The 30 year thing is for rust from the inside out. I doubt the rocker cover would be covered, just the bodywork. If you don't ask, you don't get - so worth a try?

It appears that this is a common fault as my old 230k suffered with this.

I removed mine and took it to a powder coating paint shop who did a fantastic job for £20!

Did they do it in the correct colour paint? Just rang my local MB Main Dealer and they said the rocker cover would not be covered under the warranty which only applies to bodywork.

It's not really a 'fault' is it though? It's a ten year old engine bay which has suffered significant heat/wear and tear etc, a bit of blistering paint is to be expected I would say?

The Mobilo warranty comes into effect late in '98 IIRC, and probably won't cover this as I doubt it's caused by corrosion in the first place.

If it's really worrying you, you can remove the cover and paint it, but I would be tempted to leave it bearing in mind that it's only an engine cover and not likely to be seen much more than once in a while when checking fluids/servicing etc
