Paint for my W124

Hi Guys,

I'm in the throws of getting the last few bits and pieces for my W124 restoration.

I was thinking on my way in to work today about paint...

Recently there has been quite a lot of talk about oil v water-based paints and I assume the bodyshop will now want to use water-based paint, although I haven't asked them ...

Is it possible to still get the original paint from MB for "vintage" cars?

The colour would then be a perfect 735 match and one less thing to worry about. I'm just not sure it would be right to use different paint, if the original was oil-based...

Any thoughts?

Cheers,

Blondebier

not sure about specific paints, but i'd be inclined to get the paint direct from MB, rather than an aftermarket supplier. Not as dear as you'd think.

i recently got some Signal Red paint for my R107 - tried halfords to mix me up some but they said they couldnt do it as it contained lead or something. So i tried the dealer and it was about the same price as what Halfords charge.

i tried it on the car and its a perfect match. two times i've had paint mixed up from halfords for mercedes (azurite blue and smoke silver) have been slightly off colour.

Thanks SiverSaloon. I will definitely get it from MB.

I wandered whether it would now be 735 water-based as opposed to oil based.

Did it say on the container you purchased from MB?

With an older car they may need to tint the paint a little to get a decent match, so just go with what ever the body shop uses.

I may be wrong, but I think oil-based car paints are now not allowed. Find a good bodyshop and trust them. The one I use plays down the supposed disadvantages of water-based paint, pointing out that it really comes down to the need for additional drying time rather than any intrinsic inferiority. They attribute the corrosion problems they've had to fix in W210s and later cars to other factors.
