Hi,

I've bought a different set of alloys for my estate and want to refurb myself the 8 holes that I'm taking off.
Can anyone recommend aerosol paint to use for primer, laquer and silver finish?

I've read Halford paints are poor and Upol are good but more info would be helpful as well as any tips for carrying out the job.
Thanks
Toby

Upol make a very good etch primer which you'll need to ensure any other paints stick to the alloy.

I wouldn't say Halford's paints are poor and they will do the job for you as long as you get the preparation work right

Why not have the wheels bead blasted, and not expensive to have done, it would save so much time, then etch prime, then a few coats of wheel paint 044 is the most common colour

Why not just get them blasted and powder coated?

You can get them done for as little as £10 a wheel.

And they come back like new.

Nick, where can you get them done so cheaply?

All of the refurb shops that I've seen appear to charge approx £50.00 per wheel. I'm thinking of refurbing my wheels this week, 15 hole alloys, but they are polished in the middle, although I'm happy with plain silver. I was going to sand down, prime, paint and lacquer.

The bloke in the unit next door to me makes gates, and thus sends loads of work to the coaters.

Shop around locally a bit, there's always going to be somewhere.

BTW this is just for straight blasting and coating, no remeidal work or polishing.

Upol are good, as are most of the commercialy available areosols. I have had very good results even on large panels with upol and my local supplier is very good at mixing special colours. i did a little touching up on my Jaguar wheels a while back, i made sure i sanded back to good metal and used a thin layer of filler and normal primer, only real problem was a diference in colour, finished it off witha bit of laquer and theyv'e been fine.

I've just bought an SLK 230 (Jan 97). However there is some corrosion on the wheels, in the centre around the Merc star. I'm not technical but it looks as if there is a plastic layer under which the alloy has been affected by corrosion. How should I treat this? Should the plastic be peeled off, the metal rubbed down and then a new plastic layer applied? Or is this a job for a Merc dealer? Thanks for any help or advice.

Take the car into a dealer. The wheels are covered under the warrantee.

The lacquer has peeled, very common.

The Merc star is not metal but plastic, you can peel it out like a mini hub cap, be careful not to break the 3/4 legs that holds it against the rim. Then you can clean off the 11 years of salts and dusts on the inner rim. Depending how bad it is, you can paint it with UPol or silver paint.
