hi

i plan to fit blinking mirrors to my CLK (indicators in them). therefore the old indicators need to go. I dont really want the expense of getting the wings welded up and sprayed etc, so what do u peeps think about spraying the current side indicator lenses colour-coded and obviously remove the bulbs???

next question;

(1) does anyone have any old side indicators for sale cheap (either orange or clear) as i will just spray them anyway...
(2) anyone know what wire in the door sills are the indicators?

T.I.A.

Get them filled up and painted! It's not even that expensive, cost me about £150 or something including having the new door mirrors painted!

I know it's pedantic, but the good old Construction and Use regulations state that if a lamp is fitted it must work properly. This means that if you paint over it then it isn't 'working properly', so you will be in breach of the regulations.

i thought side indicators are not part of the MOT? plus the indicators are in the mirrors now anyway

Just a suggestion - if all indicators function i.e. wing mirrors and side repeaters then keep the ones in the wings as they are as they do not look too bad (extra lumination when indicating ;) ) and it will save you the expense of having the wings filled.

That doesn't seem to stop the chavs round my neck of the woods painting the entire rear light clusters of their M reg Escorts the same colour as their car's bodywork, usually metallic silver or light metallic blue. :p :D

It'll look like your car has grown blue warts IMO!!

Get yourself a set of A-Class (facelift) Classic, Elegance or Avantgard badges (they are nearly totally flat) and paint over them or keep them as they are :)

These should fit nice and snug in the holes

The connector part (bit that goes into the hole) is only slightly different I heard, could be wrong though...

They are not technically Chavs.

The correct term is A Barry. As shown here here

id leave them on... its safer... many situations where person in next lane cannot see u indicating with just the mirror ones...

That shouldnt ever happen, all the ones ive seen can be viewed from all angles, including nearly behind.

the plastic lens carries the light around to all sides.

Hang on, you think the lamp that's beneath the window-line is more visible than the one that's higher than the window line?

lol, well some of the ones with the lenses that dont come all the way around (i think the earlier ones) cannot be seen from behind very well.... was in a hairy situation once because of that...

do any merc badges (ie ones that are on the bonnets of the newer models, without a star), stick on?

The badges are curved and are fitted with a threaded thing.

Just get 'em welded up and painted would ya!

LOL, ok :p

well i took a trip to my local $tealers today. ordered indicators for both sides, a comand aux loom, and a new bit of trim as previous owner decided to destroy it with a cigarrette burn and a gearlever lock. + i dented & punctured it taking out the comand,

any idea if a bodyshop will have to spray the whole wing? its metallic paint....

I think my local bodyshop just welded a piece of metal in behind the hole and then filled the step. They painted the new metal and then feathered the paint/lacquer out over the whole wing so the edges of the panels were the same old paint with new lacquer over. Looked great! I have pics if you want (not very exciting - nothing to see!).

When the car was wrecked a couple of years ago the filler didn't crack when the wings were dented or twisted so I assume it was a good job. This is bread and butter work for a bodyshop though because it's exactly the same as repairing a rusted panel or accident damage.
