The adjuster is inside the brake drum on the rear wheels. Remove each wheel in turn, line up the adjuster with the hole in the drum and turn with a screwdriver till the wheel wont turn then back it off so it spins free. The shoes dont usually wear out as they are only applied to a stationary drum.
But it sounds as though with that much travel you may have a streched cable that needs replacing.
