Ok Boffins ( as the Sun likes to say)

If i have two PCs next to each other and want to copy stuff from one to the other (old PC to new PC, loads of pictures etc), is there a simple cable that i can buy and plug in .....

Don't want expensive networks or anything, just to copy all my bits and bobs off the old one to the new ....

Or is it a case of put it all on loads of CD's and do it that way ? :(

All advice gratefully recieved ..

cheers

H

Take the hard drive out of the old one and fit it in the new one. Then just copy across the info you want to retain. Hope that helps.

Wouldn't class myself as an expert or boffin - but I'd imagine that the easiest way would be to put the hard drive from the old PC into the new one, then copy accross as required (if you are talking 'loads' of data?). Otherwise, a network connection of some sort or if it's only a few gigs, maybe use a DVD-R disc or a few CDRs?

Good luck :)

do the pcs have network cards in already? if so you can connect them with a single cable.

Another option is to use a USB data bridge like this one on eBay

otherwise a CDRWs or DVDRWs will do the job cheaper but slower

By far the easiest and fastest way is to pull the hard drive out of the old PC, plug it into the new one and copy.

You can use a serial cable to do a direct PC to PC connection but it's so slow that copying to CDs is probably nearly as quick.

I want to keep the old PC active though , i don't want to strip the drive out of the old one really....

Nt sure if they have network cards, how do you tell ....

1, have a look on the back of them, if there's a connection that looks a bit like a phone plug but narrower it may even say "LAN" on the card

2 look in the control panel and see if there is anything is listed under "network adaptors"

if you haven't got cards fitted I think I've got a pair of netgear adaptors lying around somewhere if you want them

Ah - ha ...

I have a network adaptor card thingy that Ian sorted me out with to install my EPC (still haven't got round to fitting it :o technology scares me now )

I shall look at the old one shortly....

Laplink

Buy a RS232 cable and a copy of Laplink from eBay, that's the way I've done it in the past with old PCs and laptops. Laplink's software allows you to select directories to copy from the old PC and where to on the new PC.

There is a special usb to usb lead available , which allows you to connect 2 pc's together. It costs about £15.00 and should be available at most good pc shopsor pc fairs.
Howard try Megabytes at Worcerstor Park High Street, They sell them there

Howard if you have networkc cards firt them and make them active, then just set the IP addresses in the same range and use a crossover cable. Total cost about £2.

Erm.. Thanks Andy.

It's been a hard day.. I've fitted a towbar to a Pug 406 from scratch, including twin electrics, fitted a new glowplug to my car (to replace a fairly recent one) and some other jobs.
