Pearlescent paint V Metallic paint: whats the difference?

Pearlescent has teeny weeny glass beads added to the paint, this caused weird light refraction hence you get a multicoloured paint effect (depending on which angle you view it from). Metallic has teeny weeny bits of reflective "stuff" added to the paint, hence light bounces off the relective surface.

my merc is Pearlescent paint but how is that different to metallic?

Different size of reflective plates in the paint -pearlescent bigger than metallic:confused:

Pearlescent paints use additives that consist of tiny chips of synthetic inorganic crystalline substances that are painted on one side and reflect different colours under different light, the flakes are larger than the ground metallic additives
 
which is better or more expensive?

Its slightly more expensive than metallic, but in trade it is frowned upon when used on an expensive car, its more for a boy racer image and most effective on light colours like the pinks, purples and blues.

It is no different to use
 
and Pearlescent = higher grade target for the shell suited yobs and neds. Like a magnet for deliberate scratching and scoring.

I think they get more points for a hit on one.
 
Pearlescent can be more difficult to match - based upon my late night viewings of dodgy TV like Boyd Coddington's Hot Rod Shop, Wrecks to Riches, etc.

I recall a car was resprayed in pearl blue - the front wings were sprayed separately to the car but during the same session. The wings had been stood/hung at an angle other than the final angle they would sit at when fitted to the car.

Result? Wings appeared to be a different colour when fitted.

If these folks can get it wrong then we should be very wary when accepting any accident repair from the average bodyshop? :)

It is the angle of the gun in relation to the surface that gives another colour effect, and not the effect of hanging the parts up as the flash time is only minutes irrespective of two single or one double coat.

The heavier the flakes the more prone they are to air pressure, angle and thinning also the air temp
