Well, it is an oily/engine question!

Need to shift some well rusted bolts holding the starter motor on an old car. These will not have seen a spanner for 20 years. Suggested to me that a product called "Kroil" is about the best but it seems to be hard to get in the UK.

I have the obligatory can of Holts Penetrating oil but are there any better alternatives?

Wurth Rost-off works for my workshop.

I've never had troubles with a can of WD40; admittedly, I've never tried too losen a 20 yearold bolt...

Soak it in diesel for a day or two.

Probably not!
give it a good repeated soak for as long as you can
clean the bolt heads
then with a VERY good fitting socket - I suggest a 6 flat sided socket, (not the normal star type) and a decent length bar try and get it undone first time

Working at old tractors (20 years old is a mere youngster) I have found a good soaking in brake fluid works. Failing that, use heat. Strangely, tightening a bolt first can help. The main thing is to avoid doing damage to the nuts.

Thanks all.

The Wurth "freezing" oil looks very promising. Works like a plumbers freezing spray on the bolt itself so that it contracts, cracks the rust interface and then oil element can work in.

Jgevers, where do you get this stuff from? Motor factors?

Hi,

We get it in bulk direct from Wurth.

This site retails it http://www.headturner.co.uk/headturner/headtunermenu.html

The following links are the 3 different product discriptions for the 3 different rost offs.
