Perpendicular Park Assist (ML 250)

Does Perpendicular Park Assist work on a ML 2015 (W166) model?

Parallel parking works just fine, but I am unable to get Perpendicular parking to activate, despite driving around the supermarket car park all evening!
Is it supposed to work?

The owner's handbook states

Active Parking Assist will only detect parking
spaces:
that are parallel to the direction of travel
that are at least 59 in (1.5 m) wide
that are at least 51 in (1.3 m) longer than your vehicle

I thought it was only parallel parking.
