Personal best mpg in my 211 320CDi

53mpg used to be popular number short term for me, :o with 43 as a long term average:thumb:

Pretty impressive. :)

I am seriously considering getting the car mapped next year to see if I can get both improved mpg and performance.

28mpg over the last 6k miles, nearly all urban(ish).

Time for a petrol?

Yep. I'd say so.

Unless you do lots of longer journeys diesel doesn't really make sense. If you buy a 2 litre 4cyl one of course you will see slightly better MPG, but if you want a V6/8 then it has to be petrol for that type of driving, a NA petrol suits urban driving more anyway as the throttle is not so on/off.

How many miles do you do a year?

I only do 10k in my E320 CDI but 8k of that is motorway driving. I average 50-55mpg on the motorway run and I'm not sure a petrol engine would offer the same economy with comparable power/torque.

I owned a Megane Trophy which was running 260bhp/300lbs-ft and for that same run it would average 42mpg with a light foot. That was a 2.0 turbo charged engine in a car far lighter than my E.

If all I did was town driving a petrol is the way to go. For long journeys a diesel is ideal. I used to find my old SAAB tdi ran better after a long run getting it right up to temperature!
