I have seen a number plate which I like however I don't like the price tag! Now I know a number plate is 'only worth what someone is willing to pay' etc etc but if it is advertised at a price they are hardly going to drop the price by a couple of grand are they?

Anyone had any experience of dealing with haggling for a number plate?

Also thinking that if I email them they will see the relation to my name and bump the price up or not take an offer...!!

All you can do is phone them and make an offer. They can only say no.

A pal of mine has 'G1NA G' .... ;) don't think its for sale though ...

That looks good, the one I'm looking at is perfect for my name though!

Just the price! :wallbash:

Its on his wifes car ....

Gina , are you living in Newquay now ?

I'm in Rock ( just up the coast ) from time to time , perhaps a summer Cornish mini GTG on the cards ?

Not living in Newquay, still in the 'muff. Certainly up for a gtg down this way, love driving and sunny Cornwall is always nice for a weekend away or day out.

How about May 31st Jamaica Inn GTG? I can go to that one! :)

...until you get stopped by the police and get forced to re-space it to: G1 NAG, which doesn't look quiet so good.

(and yes, the police do do this. I have a friend who is called Andy Fair, and he had the number plate A FA1R, until the police stopped him, now he has AFA 1R, which means nowt............)

Just read through that and that is shocking and frustrating.

Hence why I am reluctant to buy it myself if you like. I emailed them as if I was my mother under her name and email address! :thumb:

Hardly think they will come down to my price range though....although I'm stretching it a bit, but if it was low enough, I would! :D

I have just bought a plate, having been looking for ages I can say with some certainty that there are people out there who delude themselves on the value of number plates. I only wanted a prefix plate to hide the age of my CLK55 and eBay was where I spent most of the time looking. I managed to get one in the end for £51 which included the £80 assignment fee (go figure!) but I saw many ordinary plates for sale which people wanted significantly more than the £245 for a 'basic' DVLA plate. I offered a reasonable amount on a couple and just got abuse back from the sellers.

Another good place to consider is the DVLA auctions, details on the DVLA website. I would consider registering and placing telephone bids for a number of 2X3 and 3X3 (number/letter) plates which have a v low reserve (less than £600). The law of averages says that at least one will go at the reserve price in my view.

Best to try the truth to be honest. Ring them, stating who you are, why you are ringing them, and the fact that you can't afford the number but like it, and ask if they are prepared to lower it to the price you can pay, and give them that price.

then inform them to have time to think about it, and if they want to leave it for sale for another month to see if they can get the price they want, tell them your offer won't expire and if they want to drop later, knowing they can get a sale, albeit lower, then they have all the cards and can do as they please.

basically, no pressure on them either way.

worse that can happen is you don't get it. best that can happen is they agree, and maybe given a month or two, they may lower it nearer what you can pay, and you maybe able to meet a tad higher price.

No point bluffing, just be nice and give them the truth. will take 5 to 10mins on the phone.

Plate is up on the website for £3495, I don't want to pay more than a grand! Bit cheeky?!

I'm guessing it's something very similar to GINA, perhaps a G1NA?

If so then they'll be expecting someone called Gina to be the new owner, and it will be factored in to the price, and so are unlikely to bump the price.

However if you have an unusual name which the seller doesn't realise exists until receiving the enquiry, then you can imagine that they'd do what they could to maximise their return.

Scumbag's suggestion is a good one.

I might do that Monday (bank holiday though) or Tuesday, worth a shot!

About ten years ago I saw a numberplate that was going to be auctioned at a DVLA auction in York. It read exactly as my surname, provided that you could accept a zero as an O (not too difficult!) and a five as an S (slightly more difficult).

The value was estimated at £2000. I thought it might fetch a little more so I prepared to spend up to £3500.

On the day, the bidding started at £2000 and went to £3500 so quickly I didn't even get the chance to bid. It rapidly went over £5000, then was eventually knocked down for £5400.

I was *so* disappointed. :(

To console myself, I bought a cheap plate online from DVLA the next day. I never put it on the car, but sold it a few months later for double what I paid for it.

But I still covet that plate with my surname.

Same with us ..

We could have had a plate that spells our surname exactly , and somehow dad forgot to do the bidding ...

My surname is Miatt , the numberplate was M1 ATT ...
