Hi all

I've had a problem over the last couple of weeks whereby my C Class cuts out on starting. I have to turn the key to it's furtherest position and hold it there whilst revving for a couple of minutes, otherwise it cuts out. It's almost as if the engine has to be very warm before it'll start OK.

When it is running, it's very stuttery. I'm unable to accelerate fully - in fact, the more I accelerate, the slower the car goes!

I had a performance panel air filter fitted so I removed this in case it was confusing the sensor or sucking in too much cold air, but this made no difference.

I assume the problem is air/fuel related. Has anyone else experienced this or have any ideas as to what the issue is? It's driving me nuts!

Cheers

Don't know what type of performance panel filter you fitted but some are known to contaminate the MAF sensor leading to problems very similar to what you describe. Try replacing the standard air filter and ducting making sure its free of any contamination and replace or clean ( http://www.mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=26286&highlight=replace+MAF ) the sensor element in the MAF with a genuine replacement from BOSCH or Pierburg from euro car parts. Don't be tempted to buy a cheap one from Ebay.http://mbclub.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=25262&highlight=pierburg

these units may be different in location and detail in your car but principles will be the same.

As above mate, sounds very similar to a MAF related issue, also check the O2 sensors as well, they can give you some issues similar to yours.

Not entirely helpful WRT your problem but I would say if you adopt that technique of starting you are likely to send the starter and ring gear into orbit.
