Petrol Smell inside while driving C180 W203

Hi.

I had an SL that did the same.

Obviously I had a leak somewhere so made a visible check of the engine bay. Found nothing.

It turned out the fuel pump underneath the car had a pipe connected to the filter, the wrong size clip had been used to crimp on to it so it was not properly sealing.

Difficult to find as the tray below the pump caught the spillage which evaporated as I was driving, so no visible leaks.

Worth a look FYI.

am I right in thinking that the fuel tank is under the seat, or am I confusing this car with another? If I am right then there is a cover over the sender unit that has a habit of leaking.

Hi, i had similar issue with peugeot 406 3liter engine, the smell was only when engine is cold. To find the leak first look where is the salon air intake, and also smell is when fuel drops on hot parts, like it was for me it was leaking through clip-sealing with thin jet strait to exaust manifold. There was no leak when engine is warm.. so it was tricky to find out that you need to look for leak strait when the engine is ON . YOU MUST find it cause, it can seriously cause fire under hood.. this issue is no joke..

See pic below item 110 pump unit, 130 filter reg combined, then its one single pipe up to the fuel rail.
Pipe should be easy to see at cylinder head then it just goes to the injector rail.

Item 90 is the flexi pipe from the car body to the engine fuel rail, item 60 is pipe from filter the the front of the car.
Yours is the top rail the bottom curved one is for the vee engines.
