Ph buying guide: Porsche 911 turbo (996)

The engine in that car is amazing but the interior is comedy.

I was quite tempted by a 996 C2 a few years ago. They look like very good value for money, but then so does the Boxster at £5k these days.

I had a ride in a mapped 996 turbo, whilst i sat in the back the chap whipped it of the lights & i kid you not i almost fell out the back window.

A Porker is an itch I have to scratch sometime soon. I've always wanted a 911 but maybe finances will dictate its a Boxster. I can finance the purchase of the 911, but keeping it maintained and serviced may prove a little pricey for me.

But, then when I look at Boxters, I think, maybe I should be going for an Elise, decisions decisions :) My problem is, too many car itches to scratch.

I was only looking this morning at Porsche I could not believe the price drop on these cars and a lot of them for sale of every model

Incredible pieces of machinery.

Buy from sterling cars. Mark Pearce is a great guy.

Doesn't cost much to run and maintain as long as you buy the right car in the first place. Like any other.

Boxster was the worst car I have ever owned, a complete money pit engine wise, for 2 seater Elise or Honda S2000 is a much better car will definitely go back to Porsche ownership at some point but not sure if a 911 (itch I have not scratched) or a Panarmera

As a current owner of a 911 (997) I can only say that is a great car to have very practical and every time you drive it it feels like the first time ie FANTSTIC. Also although not cheap to run and maintain its not sd bad as other sport/super cars

The Turbo, GT2 and GT3 are built around a totally different bottom end than any of the other 996/997/Boxster/Cayman variants and are pretty much bullet proof.

I had a 996 Turbo when it was pretty new and it was more than quick enough however one of my work colleagues with more money than I could ever imagine had his x50 optioned car further upgraded to somewhere around the 620bhp mark. He was quite a capable driver with full race licence too but I never took him up on his offer to go for a 'blast' in his car!

my 2 Boxsters were superb, and completely trouble free :)

Actually Sean, your change to the GT3 is one of the reasons I'm hesitant about the Boxster. "the car I should havw bought" thread of yours is how I see buying a Boxster too.

I know I'll like it but still want to scratch the 911 itch :)

Not a big fan of porsche but my mate gave me a shot in his turbo, an amazing car that made my C55 feel slow when i got back in it!

if you have an itch, you must scratch it ..

however, a Boxster is an amazing car.

I wouldn't have traded my new 981 Boxster for anything other than a GT3 ..

I've just come from a 996C4S very dull car to drive in my opinion. I would not describe it as fast. Ok a Turbo is a different animal but the 996 is so dated not even the same sport as my 55. The 55 is miles better. Itch scratched but never again for me.

I find the C4S boring as well, and the Turbo, if you're going 911 RWD every time imho and don't bother with turbos, working a 911 and being stunned by its limits is what they are all about.

And in my experience the most stunning limits are those of the Turbo ;)
