Phaetons

One for the deep thinkers, not the show-offs.

It was a sure as eggs that this great car would not be able to emerge from the shadow of the VW name, and would therefore suffer catastophic decline in used prices. Apart from suspension problems reported on early models, it seems pretty bullet proof, and if I were after a luxury limousine I would look no further. Sadly, my mini-fleet is committed in a different direction and really cannot be allowed to grow further. I shall remain envious of Phaeton owners.

It struggles to shrug off the image of a Posh Passat. Very well made though. My brother rang me from the states asking for my opinion...Phaeton or E Class Marcedes?
My advice..Mercedes if you want to see much of your money back come resale time in a few years; Phaeton if its going to be a long term relationship. Also they don't have A and B Roads in his state. Its all Freeway where the Phaeton will excel. He's still pondering.

It's not that cheap. You can buy a brand new one for less than £35K. It's the W12 that's £60K+.

I's seriously consider a Phaeton estate.

I agree that in these brand conscious times people often buy according to the badge rather than looking at the obvious quality of the product. The clear example has to be the posh Toyota brand, Lexus. Maybe VW need to launch the Vexus or Volkgatti brands on the world...

I think they have! They are called Audi and Bentley. People are (or have been) happy to spent £100k+ on a car which shares its mechanical and electronic platform with the Phaeton.
Ok, the Bentley does have a couple of turbos and even more wood and leather, but it really does show how much people are prepared to pay for the image.
I worked for 4 years for Bentley to increase the brand value by winning Le Mans:)
From a pure engineering persective the Phaeton is a cracking car. Unfortunatly image has a very real effect on the actual value of the car.

Its a great used car buy for very little money. Shame it looks like a bloated Passat.
