Can anyone please remind me what I need to make my 2006 C220 CDI work my mobile phone.
Am I correct in that they are prewired but need a unit?
Something under the arm rest?
Is that all?

Thank you

You would need the Convenience Telephony option which fits under the centre armrest.

However this original factory option is quite expensive to retrofit, and it is also technologically obsolete, so there's little point in going down this route.

Your best bet is to either fit a modern Bluetooth adapter (e.g. Parrot), or replace the original MB radio with an infotainment unit that has built-in Bluetooth (e.g. COMAND NTG2.5, or a more modern Android-based unit such as Erisin).

I was hoping it was just a matter of fitting a unit and that would be it.
Would the original be Bluetooth?
Thanks Ken

If your 2006 car does not have the Convenience Telephony option, then all you have is the telephone buttons on the radio and on the steering wheel, but these buttons don't actually do anything.

The original Convenience Telephony option came with a cradle that fitted various Nokia phones of the era, but did not have Bluetooth by default. However, Bluetooth could be added using an optional Bluetooth module.

But as said, it's expensive to retrofit and it's old tech anyway.

Thank you for that information.
I think I will give that a miss then.
I have a cheap thing that plugs in the lighter that I can connect my radio to my phone . It can take a call but don't gave a speaker.

Thank you

www.commandonline.co.uk are the people to talk to.

I have a 2009 E320 (W211). My car was pre wired for a mobile phone from the factory:

  • Option 354 Antenna for telephone (shark fin antenna on rear of roof)
  • Option 386 Mobile Pre-installation MTUS
Option numbers for your model may be different. My car had a connector mounted in the rear wall of the centre console armrest cubby hole. All the wiring was in the car, buttons on steering wheel, all ready to go, there were two options to connect a phone:

Option 1
  • A holder that clipped onto the connector in the centre armrest - the holders were phone make/model specific.
  • A mobile phone of the appropriate make/model for the holder above.
Option 2
A bluetooth adapter that clips to the connector in the centre armrest

Given cost and anticipated usage (I'm not a big fan of using phones in cars even where its legal with hands free) I opted for option 1. I got a 2nd hand adapter off ebay (£23) for an old Nokia handset i had lying around. Added a GiffGaff SIM card and was ready to rock and role. Downside - the phone in the car wasn't my regular mobile but for me that was an advantage, way more people have Donald Trump's personal mobile phone number then have my cars number.

If you do follow either option I'd speak to commandonline to be sure you identify the type of connector you have as I believe there are a couple of different connectors.

Thanks all for that.
Not worth the effort if it has to run a special phone.
I was thinking it would be Blurtooth but guess it was before that time.
Thanks again

It'll be bluetooth if you use the adapter as in option 2 in the above post.

OP, open the armrest lid. if you see a little 'hot shoe' connector plate in there you can buy various Bluetooth adapters to fit , the MB ones are out there on line and are still pretty expensive second hand...AND although the MB ones look alike there are different models . My car has it (2006 c class) and despite the car costing over £50K when new the phone buttons on the dash do nothing, it all has to be done from the steering wheel. I don't use it much anyway.

Like others on here say , it's old tech other options are available nowadays.

I do have an old Viseeo MB4 bluetooth adapter lying around somewhere that will fit the hot shoe if you have that facility.

Thanks for the reply.
Mine is a 2006 C Class. I looked in the top and bottom of the glove box but don't see any connectors but not 100% sure what it's like.

It will be in the centre arm rest, not the glove box.

On the C-Class W203, the factory-fitted telephone system fits inside the centre armrest.

If you only have a shallow storage bin under the armrest (with an odd-looking connector in the middle), then the telephone system resides under the shallow storage area.

If, however, you have a shallow storage area in the centre armrest and underneath it there's another deep (and empty) storage bin, then your car does not have a factory-fitted telephone system.

As David404 said above, www.comandonline.co.uk can fit an aftermarket Bluetooth adapter to your car, or replace your existing radio with a modern infotainment unit that has built-in Bluetooth.

Thank you for your help

My 2006 S203 C class has both the double hinged armrest lid and the deep storage below AND it has the 'hot shoe' connector for the Bluetooth unit in the shallow top storage below the armrest lid.

Could you show a picture please so I understand where any wires or connectors would be
Thanks

If you post your VIN number, someone will be able to give you a list of what was in the car from factory so you'll be 100% sure (and it's not unheard of to discover you have options you didn't know about! LOL)
