I have a MERCEDES C270 CDI on a 54 plate and I have a COMAND satnav and CD thingy (sorry, I am not only a woman but blonde too - so I don't know all the technicalities!! lol) :p

Can someone tell me what phone prep comes as standard in it - is there any way of telling what kind of phone it's for, it looks like a nokia one, but I have no idea how I tell for sure. Also, if I got a phone to fit it, would it charge the phone as well?

Thanks in advance!
Emma

I think you might be able to tell by removing it and looking on the reverse of the unit to see if it gives you a make/model.

Otherwise when you pop past a MB dealership, drop in and ask them. They should have a look and let you know.

There is loads of stuff about phones, ipodkits and comand (including compatibility) on Alfies site, it might help.:)

Thanks Matt, I just went on that site and had a scout around, I think I managed to figure it out.
Thanks for that :)

To be sure what you can and cant use in the car, PM me your full chassis number. Its possible that your car is either pre or post facelift. Most likely post facelift on a 54 plate. But then again we had a customer the other day with an 05 plated pre facelifted car!!!

Send me the chassis number and I'll objectively outline the options for you.

Thanks for the VIN. Good news, your car is a facelifted one and a very nice spec too;)

You have factory UHI phone pre-wire in the car so you have a choice of cradles. The cradles pop in and out of the centre armrest quite easily by pressing the small button on the upper right and sliding the cradle backwards. You can get a specific cradle for your phone if its on the supported list. There are quite a few but they dont have one for some newer nokia's, iphones or blackberry devices yet. these though will work with the bluetooth cradles as will many other phones.

Bluetooth phones will not charge from the car cradle.

All the cradles will allow phone book download (including the bluetooth ones)to the comand unit, subject to which phone you use with which cradle!

The main two bluetooth cradles are the SAP and HFP. both offer address book download. The HFP cradle will use the phone's aerial whereas the SAP cradle uses the cars aerial. The SAP will allow a SIM to be placed into it thus making it a phone in its own right. The SAP cradle will also allow text messages to be sent and read from the comand unit. The HFP will not do this.
Typically thr SAP is about £350 from Mercedes and the HFP £237. The fixed phone type cradles are about £150 but limit you to that type of phone. There are cheaper sources.

The phone-specific cradles appear on eBay all the time, I paid about £60 for my Nokia 6230i one.

Hi Alfie, I found out it's the Nokia 6230 attachment, and I figure it's probably the cheapest solution to just buy one of those phones (I won't use it outside of the car anyway, so it doesn't matter much what it looks like) and I have a pay as you go sim spare at the moment which has come out of another phone, so I should be sorted for less than £40!

Bill, I did look on ebay for that solution but it's going to cost best part of £100 still on there to get my phones adapter, so I figure it's better just to buy the Cr*ppy phone and have done with it! ;-)

Right, 6230 arrived fresh from ebay, works wonderfully in the car..... except, it doesn't seem to charge??:(

NOt sure if its me or not, but can it charge through the Pop-Port, because the re is nohting going into the normal 'Jack' port that you would normally charge it with??

......confused..... (again!) lol :o

Nokias don't charge through the pop-port, it's ridiculous. I have to hook-up the charge cable and the sync cable when linking to my laptop. Most other makes charge and syn through the same (usually usb) connector.

Come on Nokia! Catch up

.....great!

Being as I bought the phone just for the car that's a bit crap.

Would consider buying another cradle and phone if anyone knows if there are any that do charge?

I have the earlier 6210 and that charges in the cradle and I understood that they all did

Been having a look around and now I'm REALLY confused, because it seems other are saying that the phones ARE charing i their MERC UHI kits!!!!

From another MB Forum :

"If you are happy with your 6230 and cradle solution, why change to Bluetooth interface? You'll give up battery charging, use of external antenna with signal booster, and limit the feature set that is available with your car's hands-free system. Your only gain would be the convenience of not having to dock your phone."

Does it have a pop-port for data connection? I have just read through the user handbook for the 6230 and the only mention of charging is via the jack. There bwas mention of an "ignition detector" that can be enabled to switch off the phone 20secs after connecting to a car kit and the ignition is switched on. Not sure exactly what this means?

My E65 does not charge through the pop-port and needs a seperate power supply to the seperate charging jack.

I use the straight forward cradle that came in the car, Sad to say that I do not know what a pop port is though I can guess.

Panic over, I had the bright idea to clean the contacts....I scrubbed both connections (phone and holder) hard and hey presto - it's working now! :D

Glad you got it sorted jadefox :)

Sorry to have misled you and cause upset :o

LOL you didn't cause me any upset!! I was just cross that the darn thing wasn't working and I couldn't figure out what was wrong with it. :)
