Pitfalls of a 13 year old 124!

I have some rust appearing around the ABS pump area which I inspected thanks to this thread. What is the advice here. Leave it till it fails or do it now? If so, whereabouts near to Cobham Surrey can do this sort of thing?

I didn't notice mine, until a friend pointed it out. It was rather severe, IMO.

I would do it sooner rather than later. It should cost less, as man hours are the main factors here. The actually materials cost peanuts by comparison.
Also, I've heard that if the rust is within a certain distant of where the ABS is situated, it can be an MOT failure.
My Merc Specialist did mine. I would think any decent bodyshop or capable Merc Specialist should be able undertake the work.

Good luck!

It's good to hear people reading this and becoming aware :)
Until the rust was pointed out, I didn't even realise this was a rust point on 124 Mercs

N/S Rear Arch:
IMG_9581.jpg

hi all,

would live to know the conclusion regarding the rust on the rear wheel arches. i have just found rust on mine in exactly the same place.

I saw water running down the gap between the rubber seal and the rear window when i was washing the hood, and wondered where it was going, had a check and the wheel arch lining was spongy:eek:.

was this patched? or was it a replacment wheelhouse section? was the rust contained to just aroung the grommet or did it extend further?

regards, mark.

Hello Mark.

The hole in each wheel arch was patched. Apparently it's a gromit to fill a hole form the original factory pressings, during construction of the car.
Therefore, it's not required for anything, such as drainage.

I'm afraid I can't remember the break down of the work, for that one fix, but it shouldn't be too expensive.

Remember, the earlier you catch it, the cheaper it will be :)
All the best with the repair.

Just going out to inspect mine!!

All good here. Thanks for the tip though.

My car as per Avatar ,is going in for some seriousy welding on the off side sill area soon. The car did not over-winter well and for some reason the off side is far worse than the near side. I assume the previous owner parked on the road and the off side picked up all the carp thown up by passing vehicles from their nearside. Never buy a car from Scotland!!

Stands by for incoming.

just booked mine into the local bodyshop for three bits of welding:

1, N/S wheelarch around grommet,
2, N/S front wheelarch where stud that hold archliner should be (now perished).
3, Section under washer bottle.

hopefully this should sort it all, O/S front wing needs replacing but as this is a bolt on it can wait a little.

This thread got me worried, I had a look at mine and the wheels dont too bad.. but look what I found...
