Hi
I'm planing to sell my 56 CLS 320 and purchase one of more reliable modes.

After some investigation I am aware that 220CDI 170HP (OM 646 DE 22 LA EVO) (not blue efficiency) is great engine. It was fitted in different models up to some years which I checked and consider here. I do about 16k millage per year and want a piece of mind. Maybe unnecessary but after glow plug relay problem with my CLS I do not feel that comfortable with it.

But again, this selection is based on limited research so if you have any suggestion please feel free to share your advice.

So I consider:

2008/2009 C-class (around 10k)
Modern look, compact size
Any negative experiences with auto gearbox ?

2008 E-Class (around 7k)
Dated look
Coil springs and electrical issues

2005 CLK (around 6k)
potential rust problems however I red somewhere that form 2004 all merc bodywork is galvanised.

there is version of OM 646 DE 22 LA with is 150HP (not blue efficiency) and it was fitted in newer CLK - which would not be a deal breaker

I do not mind 2 /4 door, less to break is better, so can not be bothered with sat nav, heated sits etc, would be great to have parking sensors tho.

What do you think?
Thank you

I've got a 57 plate c220cdi sport with the om646 Evo engine. Bought it at 3 yr old with 24k and it's now almost 8 yr old with 82k on the clock.

Apart from a few sensors it's been totally reliable. This is the best engine that Merc made, all those old sprinters shooting up n down the motorways are fitted with this variation of engine.

Keep looking to move on from this motor, but find it hard as there's nothing wrong with it.

Get one and you won't be disappointed.
