I need some help guys. Car has been going into limp home mode only on long journeys cruise control at 75.
gent at work bought his code reader in and I cleared the gearbox faults at the time ( there weren’t any but it wouldn’t clear engine or gearbox errors. Since then the gearbox won’t change manually and to put it in park I have to turn ignition off😩 . I’m doing 500 miles tomorrow and I’m stressing. Any ideas? I’ve read gearbox has settings but I wouldn’t have thought clearing any fault codes would have cleared these. Please help . Chris

I am confused.

You said that you cleared the gearbox faults then say there were no faults and that the code reader used could not clear gearbox and engine errors?

Are you getting the correct gearbox position shown in the cluster? For example are you seeing R when in reverse, D or equivalent in Drive?

So

These faults have been in place for around a year by the looks of it. Why haven't you had it sorted prior to your trip tomorrow?

There were engine faults but the code reader said it couldn’t delete them ( my reader shows no faults ) . I went to transmission and there were no faults but I guessed it wouldn’t harm it to press clear faults anyway.. reader said it couldn’t delete faults. Worked ok Wednesday evening but last night I put it into manual and the gears wouldn’t change. Car wouldn’t go into park or reverse. If I turn off ignition it goes straight into reverse or park. I’ve noticed the windows won’t automatically raise. You have to hold the switch until window is closed. I’m wondering if the software reader on the MacBook could have corrupted a module?

ive replaced the green O-ring in the INtercooler pipe to turbo and replaced the turbo pressure switch because of star diag at merc land. I only used a different code reader to see if I could get more info because the problem only occurs on long journeys in cruise control and is intermittent.

It’s going to just be guesswork for all on here .... think you should find a garage nearby with STAR, (preferably a good indie) and get the actual faults read, then be guided by the indie.

You don’t want to be 250miles away and stranded!

Could be the beginning of electroplate (speed sensor) failure, or some other sensor failure.

Did you get the ATF level checked while you were at the garage?

And do you have roadside recovery (Mobilo or otherwise)?

The fluid was changed before I bought I 2 years ago. No I haven’t got recovery 😭😭

But has the ATF level been checked since the problem started? The 5g box has a known issue where the pilot bush (electrical connector) leaks.

But then it could also be the electroplate, or a sensor.

OBD code readers cannot read or re-set the majority of gearbox codes. They are designed to read and in some case re-set a very specific set of codes that manufacturers had to make available to comply with legislation.

You cannot read, interpret or clear complex fault codes without either a manufacturer specific computer system (sometimes these need to be connected live to a database) or via specialist equipment such as iCarsoft etc but even these have limitations compared to the manufacturer level diagnostics.

As well as the ability to generate codes these diagnostic readers can also read live data from components and program if required There is considerable skill required in knowing how to look, where to look and how to interpret the data,

Thankyou. I took it to a reputable Indy by me Merc land and it looks like the reader screwed up loads of things. He cleared faults and altered a few things. Took it out for a spin and said it seemed ok. Dad took it home ( I’m on holiday ) and it wouldn’t go back into park without turning off ignition Again. Mechanic thinks it’s the Gearbox solenoid but only happened since putting on friends diag wouldn’t change gear manually. I think it’s possibly screwed up the gearbox settings.

Most probable eletro plate replace pilot bush at same time very common failure part
