Please stop me from buying this...

Expensive rubber...

I had a look around - seems like I may be able to get away with just replacing the rubber "pads" on the tracks instead of the actual tracks...

So...
+ Tax exempt
+ No road rage
+ Range (100gallons@4mpg = 400miles roughly what my W202 does)

- Fuel consumption
- Servicing would be... well... difficult... I doubt the ramps at pit start would cope with it

OMG you've already RESERCHED it!!!:eek::eek: as you pull up your drive I feel your other half will be holding this:ban::D

come the zombie apocalypse you would be set though...

Hmmm... some of these are MOT exempt too.... interesting........

SWMBO is in Ireland for 5 months... so that bridge can be dealt with then... I've texted her and run the idea past her... let's see what she says (she is a little quirky too, more so than me at times)

I really need to get to bed, so this will be my last edit for the night...

That's one interesting thing to have on your driveway... considering my nehibors complained when I dug the hole to bury the water cistern to collect rainwater, a thing with 2 missiles would certainly raise an eyebrow or two... but at less than 1mpg, this isn't doable.

I reckon 4-5mpg is probably the lowest I'll got for a sunday car...

This is a slippery slope though...
Military vehicles, militaria and military classifieds

That one doesn't even have the problem of tracks...

EDIT: Another +: seems like I can convert it to multifuel quite easily (I'm assuming veggy oil as it's a diesel)

Ramps, RAMPS???????????????? No point putting this on ramps you have to lift the power pack (Known as an engine by civilians) out the top. then swing it over and put in a drip tray. They have 2 dc generators (no alternator), rectifiers, 2 banks of 2 batteries (100a/h each so a 24v 200a/h system). I can't remember any more, it was 1994 when I last worked on one.
I do remember they are a **** to stop or turn and the top speed is more like 20MPH downhill with a following wind maybe 25 at a push. Which are part of the reasons the Army got Warrior APC's instead. I remember an advertising campaign on German national tv when the Warrior replaced these because the "boxheads" used to drive really close behind 432's knowing they had an age to stop. When Warrior's came out they could stop in a few metres from 40+MPH, when they did an emergency stop nearly 2/3 of the vehicle was up in the air, allowing cars to disappear under the rear and turned into metal pancakes. I think a couple of people died from driving too close!!!:dk:

IMHO do NOT buy they were a pain in the ar*e to work on when you had a purpose built workshop with all the gear, so god knows what you would be able to do on your drive:eek:.

Stick with four wheel drives, much cheaper and easier to live with. Oh and you need to wear ear defenders and ski goggles to drive these otherwise you'd be permanently deaf and blind in about 20 miles.

Just remembered something else. They aren't any good on ice, slide really badly and weigh 15 tonne not a good combo. Also the rubber track pads come loose after a few miles you have to check each one every week or so, otherwise they come off and hit things at high speed, weigh about 1 kg each with a bolt stuck out the back of very very hard rubber. You be liable for ALL damages caused by these hitting anything or anyone. The claims department on the MOD must have been quite busy I reckon! LOL:D

If you really want one of these you'll need a category H licence but don't seriously consider it.

In addition to what snoop said these things break down a lot - who is going to recover you?
You also can't drive it on a road without someone else acting as commander because you can't see enough of what's going on around you

I've seen tiller pins come out (can't steer, can't stop)
Batteries fusing under drivers seat - exposed terminals against metal seat after insulation slipped/wore away
Thrown/Split track - Tw*t to get back on
Runaway engine - these things are heavily governed, if the governor oil gets a leak and the governor stops working you can't stop the engine

They are also very labour intensive to work on if you have a dedicated workshop, assistants, the experience and all the tools. Whole pack out for many engine works
New pads regularly - and there are a lot of them
Also likely to damage the road surfaces around you even with proper rubber on. Don't know if that will cause any problems with neighbours/council

Still, there is always that zombie apocalypse to worry about :D

It's a larf to think about, but it would be a complete pig to (try to) live with.

Imagine driving down the local high street and throwing a track. How popular would you be? And how would the AA/anyone else tow you out of the way?

Come to think of it - how would you fill the fuel tank? At a petrol station? No way - it wouldn't fit between the pumps! The up-side though is that these sort of engines run on just about anything - diesel, coal, lard, meths, newspaper...

Is the plasma screen a military fit? :p

Surprisingly, one of those will do 50 mpg.
The handling was described by Jeremy Clarkson as "Taking the hammerhead at 90 mph, the back stepped out a little, but was easily caught"
The tracks hardly leave any imprint on wet grass, let alone tarmac.
The little old lady up the road who has one told me it "turns on a sixpence"
The local indy told me " I get these in all the time - I can do an 'F' service on these for thirty quid"

As long as you have parking space, I say go for it.

Ted this must be a wind up.

The pack is a 6 litre V12 and the vehicle weighs in excess of 12 tonnes. 5 mpg is optimistic never mind 50
The tracks don't leave much in the way of marks....providing you are going in a straight line. As soon as you turn you are braking one of the tracks and spinning the vehicle on the ground believe me this makes a lot of mess on any grass surface and over a period of time will do so on the road aswell
The oil alone will cost well in excess of 30 quid so how can someone do a service for that price.

I drove these for over 5 years in Germany so have first hand experience of how they drive, how much maintenance is involved and what the issues are including how often they break down, what it takes to recover them, the labour involved to repair them and their impact on the environment around them.

Trust me Spinal, don't do it.

I think Ted's having a bit of fun Tagnut ;)

That's what I thought hence the comment about a windup. I also thought Spinal might not have been serious in the first place but you never know do you....

Might be fun for the first week or so but the pain would soon set in :wallbash:

I think "she" isn't too keen... since I sent her that text, I haven't heard back... no goodnight message, no goodmorning message... no reply... nothing....

I'll find out what she thinks when I call her today...

Recovery isn't an issue... in fact, that just seems like an excuse to get another one to tow it :p

Being honest... I was only half-serious... if I had a farm, I would be much more serious... but I've never gotten an off-road only vehicle as the idea of having a trailer/flatbed on my driveway impressed me... this does seem like something that would need a flatbed... as road legal as it may be...

Now, that amphibious russian thing... that's got wheels, right? :p

They are old 1960's kit but were used in Iraq and are still in use in Afghanistan due to lack of sufficient Warriors.

They've had reactive armour fitted to counter the threat from RPG's and a top turret for a machine gun but are still out there plying their trade with the British Army after all these years.

Go on buy it :D

Single figure MPG 5 or 6 and maybe 50mph.

Try 4 mpg. 50mph, no chance! Back in the 80s in BAOR Germany you were lucky if you got these things to travel more than 40 miles without falling over!

Driven one of those.

Surprisingly easy to drive.

Munch fuel like nothing else.

Noisy.

Cramped.

Reek of fumes.

Cheap to buy - nightmare to run (I'm told)

Its not like they have had one careful lady owner, never been off road etc..!!

Plenty available at military auctions - somewhere in Yorkshire IIRC.
