ok it's in the News Of The World and it's supposedly from Merseyside

http://www.newsoftheworld.co.uk/story_pages/news/news3.shtml

You just got to love how not only do the police not know who's driving they don't even know who's car it is :)

If it's not genuine then who's going to own up to driving a fully liveried patrol car around Liverpool whilst their mate stands around wearing a police uniform?

TV stunt? No obvious film crew there - any other suggestions?

Andy

all you need is a decent handbrake and a nice straight bit of road.........

and normally it's not something you do when there is a copper standing watching :)

That lets us off the hook then with our parking brakes, anyone tried it ?

yep and it doesn't work although you don't have to use the handbrake but then it's not easy in autos either as you need to change from reverse to forwards whilst the car is moving.

Nice Move...Too bad it was infront of youngsters, that's just irresponsible...

My mate tried it in his M3 when he was 18, got it for his birthday, lucky loaded git. He lost control, came together with a lamp post...He was grounded for 2 years and then his parents managed to find it in their hearts to buy him a car...

...A Fiesta 1.1 LX...haha...

I didnt see any youngsters there!

Learning how do do a J turn is part of a specialist Police training course carried out if you are good enough to continue after gaining a high advanced driving grade.

But of course the newspapers flower it up and it only seems dangerous if the papers tell you to think its dangerous!
Seemed the driver knew exactly what he was doing, most probably an instuctor showing the others what they will be expected to do in a few days time.

A reverse flick does not involve use of the handbrake : it is simply a matter of reaching a sufficient speed in reverse and combining a rapid steering input to initiate the turn , combined with a sharp application of the footbrake to shift weight from the front of the car . The sideways momentum already initiated brings the front end round and the car can be shifted into drive for a seamless getaway . Easily mastered with practice and much easier in an automatic than a manual : M-B automatics can select the gear for the opposite direction of travel as long as speed at the moment of selection does not exceed 15 mph . I used to do it in my 280E - just for fun !

A handbrake turn is a completely different thing involving throwing the car through 180 deg , commencing with the car going forwards and using the parking brake to break traction on the rear wheels .

Unless Mersey Bucks have taken to wearing Dark Blue Polo shirts (erm, in the style of Police Officers on Driving courses...) instead of shell suits, and given that a J-Turn would be pretty much expected on a Cat-A Course and other Advanced Driving Courses too, I go with it being a camera-phone shot from a Police Driving Course on closed roads/MOD land.

(If GMP say the car is theirs, then there is not a lot of confusion about who owns it??!!)

The Trainee Officers do seem a tad close to the action though - I wouldn't want to stand that close...

I am sure that when the Officers surf for internet responses to this article, and find they are refered to as "youngsters", they'll be chuffed.

PS
You don't use the handbrake - you use the momentumnmnn of the car, and it is easier in an auto.

Anything that appears in the News of The World beyond the date line needs to be treated with some doubt, in fact even the date has been known to be wrong on occasions....

I did that once.

I have managed that very same manouevre in a 1993 Renault Trafic minibus. Was showing my mate how to do it, but he didn't manage to perfect it, which was quite satisfying as i didn't have a licence at the time and had learnt it from a magazine. And before any of you start going on about inlicenced drivers, I did it in a private yard.

I've been in a W210 for a demo of the J-turn. It was about 8 years ago at a MB open day at the North Weald air-field.
