Poly-V belt on 190E

On two occasions whilst changing the poly-V belt on my 190E, I have managed to break the belt tensioner mechanism whilst tensioning the new belt. It consists of a cast component that fits on the back of the tensioner and a steel rod that runs up to the tensioner adjusting nut. It's the cast component that has snapped on both occasions. The frustrating thing about this is that the breakage has happened before the specified belt tension was reached. The tensioner components are quite cheap so that isn't a problem, but replacing them doubles the time required to do the job. Has anyone else experienced this and can anyone suggest how the problem can be avoided?

The mechanism on mine has been broken for years. The belt is at maximum tension all the time, makes no great difference and changing the belt just requires a bit more effort
